Ok, I have a friends computer for repair.

Fine.

It's a pentium 4, that was overheating and managed to lose it's ntldr.

Hard drive is fine.

Processor was getting to about 100'c.

Paste was completely dried and icky.

So I replaced it.

Loaded up the bios, 104'c....

Doesn't feel that hot. Feels warm, like.

Dodgy sensor?

Going to re-do the paste.

Mod edit: Renamed topic to something more descriptive.

Did you properly clean the old thermal grease off of the CPU and heatsink? Is the fan operating properly? If it's actually that hot the PC should have just powered itself off or the fan should be running as fast as possible.

Yes, cleaned everything off properly.

Just stripped it down and hoovered the heatsink off (taken out of the pc to avoid static problems).

It's now idling at around 65'c...which is a big improvement...

It's what you do with a hoover.

I expect you would call it vacuuming?

Yes, or in the south, sweeping.

That's what my first thought was, but you have to actually do a bit more than vacuum the surface of the CPU and heatsink in order to prepare them for new thermal grease. That's why I was confused.

i would be suprised if you could get that down to 38'C. My little brother's P4 (non-HT) is lucky to run at 50'c unless I strap extra fans on the HSF, and my P4M laptop is lucky to get below 40'c with fans maxed.

My P4HT, MicroBTX chassis has a CPU temp of 59c on boot with fans at default (lowest, nearly silent) and 32c/45c in the other 2 sensors

At max fans, its 55c/31c/40c on boot in a warm house

HP Fan Ducts on a P4SD-LA Mobo (Flashed P4G800-V BIOS BTW). No real CPU fan.

Hoovering is described in greater depth here, although I don't understand how dust could be used to perform the manuver.

On another note, it would be cool if you could change the title to be a little more focused on your issue.

I find this rather surprising, from what I understand, your garden variety Pentium IV can handle ridiculous temperatures without missing a beat.

Try wiping everything down and cleaning the dust using a cloth or a compressed air can, i wouldn't recommend you to vacuum the inside of your PC. If all else fails you could always buy a decent cooler the cheapest ones are around $20.

I've faced a cooling device for LGA775. That device made one Pentium 4 506 heat up to over 100C and then an immediate shutdown(ps: Intel processors will performe an immediate shutdown when the core temperature reaches 104C). I've found that the device was so dusty between fan and heatsink after I've taken 'em apart. When I collect those dust together, add a little water in it and stir it, it became mud!

Sometimes the RAM problems cause the file missing problem such as PCI.sys, NTOSKRNL.exe... Some times damaged IDE connecting cord may cause the problem as well. Then we don't need to discuss the pin damage of the connector port.

65'c was my idle temp for my P4. Pentium 4, especially the Prescott core, ran ridiculously hot. Plus I live in Hawaii where room temp is in the 90s, even higher during sunset.
