So yeah, I turned on my desktop after a month or two, it was working fineish except the HDD was dying... since my ISP decided to double my download quota (blah -_-) I needed a box to download on at night... ANYWAY

None of the drives initialize and nothing comes up on the screen. The HDD loading light is also stuck on - nothing changes. You can hear the HDD (and another one) try to spin up but it doesnt "click over", if you know what I mean. The DVD-RW's (yes, 2) also spin up, but fail... and it repeats about 3 times

Assuming dead motherboard? I tried with no RAM... nothing happened... no HDD's/DVD/PCI cards ... nothing. Still the same.

Don't think I have a compatible PSU ... ?

Plus it happens without any HDD's, all fans and PSU run fine

Try a BIOS reset. Re-seat the processor and memory as well if you didn't already.

Well... happened again. Except it works now, posting from it.

Maybe a new motherboard is in order?

E: think it is. Just turned the screen on;

Could just be a graphics error? Got another card you can try?

afaik that is his onboard video so pretty much means the Motherboard is stuffed.

Think it's time for an Intel Atom.

Even if it is the IGP that is toast you could still shove in an another video card. This would disable the IGP and then your problem could be solved anyway. I've had some old SiS motherboard with this problem but I put in an AGP card into the slot and the machine worked for years.

IGP = Integrated Graphics Processor, such as Intel GMA etc.

The machine was frozen when I took that picture, and alas it's refusing to POST again, so I don't think that would fix it...

Why not? If it freezes because of a faulty IGP bypassing it with an AGP card would most certainly fix it. If the IGP is broken that is. When you plug in the AGP card the IGP is disabled entirely and the shared video RAM is returned to the system memory pool. Try it, doesn't hurt :).

Magically started working again not long after the last post and has been fine ever since.

Which is great, because my laptops charger is ruined (Acer better cover this in the warranty...)

It won't work if you don't have any RAM in it, lol.

Maybe you have a bad stick of RAM, considering IGPs usually share memory with the rest of the system.

Even if the motherboard is going bad, it might be just the video. You could always try another video card if you have one laying around.

Two months later... the box is working fine

Still curious as to what it was/what caused it. Oh well!
