I had have problems with my DVD-RW drive ever since I installed XP again... Sometimes it would recognize disks and other times it wouldn't... Even ones out of the box wouldn't work so I uninstalled the drivers hoping that something would firce it back into working... Only thing is that Windows can't find the drivers... Now I have no optical drive for creating backups and such.

DVD-RW Drive:

Make: Sony-Optiarc

Model: AD-7200

Connection: IDE

http://www.sonynec-optiarc.com/products/hhid_dvdrw/ad7200.html
Link above.

Windows only identifies it as "Unknown".

Please help.

Have you used one of those ultra-stripped mini-XP installs? One of those that are stripped of all drivers and extra stuff? You can usually get problems with those since they often are stripped of drivers which are needed.

As for your drive, does your BIOS recognize it? Windows XP doesn't need any special drivers for SATA drives, only the ones that come with Windows. If BIOS recognizes it then it's all fine.

I'll do a quick re-boot to see if the BIOS says it's there... Thanks for the advice.

EDIT: Really sorry the drive is IDE.
EDIT 2: The BIOS doesn't recognize it.

Either way BIOS should find the drive. If not then jumper it correctly (master/slave) and try again if BIOS finds it. You might also try the cable select jumper setting if your other drives on the same cable are jumpered as cable select.

Try a different IDE cable aswell,

UPDATE: The Model is actually "AD-5170A"
I have hundreds of IDE cables, so that'll be my next move...

I'd just go by brand new ones.

At least here in the US you can get a DL DVD-RW drive for about $20 shipped.

I'm not suggesting that you stop trying to get it working, but if you end up just wanting to buy a new one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827136144

Nice and cheap.

The drive is recognized by XP and the BIOS but the thing is THE DISK DOESNT RECOGNIZE.
It doesn't even spin... It just tries to read it and then it gives up. I am using a Vista origional disk to test it but NOTHING WORKS. I am VERY FUSTRATED...

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE TO DO OR TRY PLEASE?

Its probably a dead drive. Did you check all the connectors are fitted securely? If you have, and its still doing it, then the drive is toast. You can get a new one for about £20 delivered on the internet. PC world might even do one for similar price.

The laser is most likely shot. If BIOS finds it then at least the electronics works, unless the motor or laser electronics is broken.

Just get a new drive.

Everything has now been fixed. The DVD drive has always been very tempermental, sometimes a change of Operating System can make all the difference. As of 18:30 GMT....
I am now running Vista.

Someone can lock the topic now!
