Starting from some months I'm hearing something like this sound coming from the hard drive or the fan(s):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5gkJC6aYc4
(yes, this is from a PowerBook but it's the same noise)

This suddenly happens, specially on situations where CPU is 100% all the time (eg. while playing some games).

Is one of these going to die?

More accurate video, but not too.

It's an not-too-old PATA 40GB Seagate ST340014A.

The noise only starts when the CPU gets constantly at 100%. If I turn off the computer for ~3 minutes, I can turn it on but a few minutes later the noise is back. For ~10 minutes the noise gets out definitely. The noise gets louder during peaks (like the YouTube player opening), but returns when the peak is done.

How does it affect the performance? If the PC lags extra worse at peak, then I'd look more towards the hard drive - Performance tends to trail off as a hard drive gets older as well as reliability. If all seems right when using the PC though, it could be a fan.

I'm not able to watch the videos (accessing Home Server over RDP - so no sound), so I can't comment specifically on that atm.

There's no lag -- it just makes noise.

That does not sound healthy. I would start backing up important data.

Maybe... a new computer if possible. Even a Pentium DualCore

256MB of RAM doesn't go far nowadays.

Fan making a noise?
Stick a pen in it, works for some people.

That hard drive sounds bad. I have some occasionally seemingly unhealthy sounding ones, but nothing that bad.

And there's nothing wrong with Pentium DualCores. I've got one (E5200) at 3.3Ghz right now.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It fixed it... for a while (by pushing the fan down back on)

Although not recommended on a laptop where you cant get a replacement easily /experience

I ain't a overclocker. The problem is what I will play in the factor of a local hardware forum.

If I say GTA IV they come with Core 2 Quads.
