Anything checked :P
Have you got any virus stories that you can share ?

Mine :
I had W32/Parite.B that lasted through like three to four reinstalls. Then I just ran some free parite.b killer froma website. Voila it's gone.
(I only had an expired trial of Kaspersky Server on the box (cause i had server 2003 installed); now i have Windows 7 6.1.7022 and happily use AntiVir Personal Edition with no problems (except the detection of keygens/cracktros, etc.))

This one is from years ago when my grandfather had an old IBM PS/Something with a 386??? processor and Windows 3.1??? installed on it.

They purchased this cards game (abandonware) from some place (forgot where they bought it), and when they installed it on this system, they picked up some kind of virus, which caused the system to display something like this whenever it booted up:

Which meant that this PC had to be returned back here (about four hours away), and we had our "geek" friend remove the virus for us. I don't know what that virus was called, but it sounds pretty unusual.

Last December, when I tried to check on the OSBetaGroup after reading pizzaboy192's post where he said it was hacked, I saw the video that was said to have replaced the entire website. A few minutes later, my whole PC got infested with Spyware and things like that, probably resulting from what the hacker did to the website. Right now though I'm using a different PC (the first one was a combination of two eMachines systems, and the one I'm using right now is a MicronPC system).

The last time I got a virus was 3 years ago, I just format if I do and I do not use security at all.

I never use protection and I have only got a few infections, but my last infection a couple years ago on my IBM 500MHz gave me 6000+ viruses and trojans so I had to re-format.

I have always tried to use anti-virus, mainly because I have some sensitive information that I don't want to loose. The anti-virus software I mainly use are:
  • McAfee VirusScan Enterprise
  • AVG Free Edition

I was browsing AeroXp a while back, and I was infected with a rootkit or Backdoor!

Kaspersky didn't find the actual virus, just the stuff the hacker was putting on my machine.

A simple restore of a Ghost image restored my PC :D

I caught a virus two weeks ago from PenDrive of my friend. He named Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Small.fyn. I tried to fight this virus with the help of ComboFix & HijackThis. Unfortunately, after two days I gave up :( & I formated my computer.

Only had a virus once, it was a few years ago now (just after I'd gone over to Vista) and must have come from an infected keygen or similar I think, I'm more careful now as it was really annoying to get rid of, always scan anything downloaded from any "iffy" sources with Kaspersky before using them! (don't use any always-on protection though as I don't really need it and it always affects PC performance)

One of our customer sites at work recently had their network infested with that "Downadup" virus that seems to be doing the rounds at the moment though, all their servers had it and everything - clearly they were behind with their patches as apparently an MS patch from October should have stopped it :P

Blaster would of been the worse for me; just did a fresh install of Windows 2000 (hadn't loaded a firewall on yet) and connected the lan in, 2minutes after, BAM, 60Second Countdown.

Other then that I'm pretty much fine, no Anti-Virus needed, just a good firewall and up to date patches.

Did have the occasional "hook into the Explorer" type loggers from Keygens, but I would notice pretty much the same time it hooked itself, CPU would go to 100% and Explorer would start crashing, but that hasn't happened in many years.

The most annoying one I've had the displeasure of experienceing was Smitfraud, had to disinfect a mate's machine which he hadn't updated since SP2 and this was about a month ago. The worst part is that it was a legit copy but he got annoyed by the popups saying he should update his machine. Some people shouldn't be allowed to own a computer. :)

I had a infected virus in my computer twice, the first time was from plugging in an iPod that I just got, and it had a virus that spread all over my PC. It also infected any removable drives, but a simple del command on the command prompt solved the problem. I don't remember what the virus was but it was a Chinese virus.

Second time I got a virus was when my brother decided to open a crack but really it was a nasty trojan that kept killing and restarting explorer.exe, even in safe mode. It took me a few days to google ComboFix, which got rid of the trojan downloader. Since that, I found a few more viruses but it never infected my computer so I simply deleted it.

The rickroll video?

That didn't give you any spyware. I know, I made it.

So, I guess I will make the first post stating that I never had a virus on any computer I have used ever.

I have dealt with spyware, adware, web browser hijackers, but besides installing updates from Microsoft and using a basic firewall, I use little other protection.

Personally, I am glad that Vista is more security orientated, but I shouldn't feel too complacent. Who knows, maybe I got a virus once and never knew about it.

I didn't necessarily mean the video, I know Bender wouldn't do something like that, but I still think it's possible that the hacker might have left the Spyware on the website. I'm still not sure that it was the hacker, all I'm saying is that it might have been.

Err, there was no hacker, it was Bender who put it up... Lol, didn't you get that?

I have had a few minor ones 1 format for some stupid crud that wouldn't go away ages ago. Well although I did get a trojan remover that was a torjan and that was before I knew as much as I do now so we got a PC shop to fix it. Also the first time I installed vista I went online with my symantec free trial which came with the brand new pcs motherboard. This was december first 07 on a brand new pc and by the 20th I changed to AVG ad aware and spybot with commodo firewall and I found 6 trojans straight away as well as a bunch of tracking cookies etc. I have also had keygens with viruses but they were minor. Some of the more fancier ones with the weird music I stay away from.

You see, if you go to the store and legally buy a product, it won't include a keygen that will infect you.

Yep, most of my stuff is legit (Windows Vista and Server 2008, and all my games), the only "pirated" stuff I have on my PC is just the really expensive software like CS4/Office/VMware etc that only businesses that make money from it can really justify owning and also a few useful bits of shareware and similar that need keygens to remove the annoying messages etc! I assume it was from something like a keygen anyway, I can't be sure as I just discovered it one day (presumably not long after I'd picked it up as I would notice such things very quickly) and couldn't think where else it could have come from.

I always buy my stuff. There is like nothing pirated on my computer. Office isnt real expensive, neither is VMware. I can understand CS4, which is like 4000 dollars.

'Expensive' is a relative term, used to describe a high cost relative to your income. For those of us who are students, there's not a chance we can afford a properly licenced copy, so as far as I'm concerned, if I can't afford to do legal properly, I might as well properly pirate it.

Virus' stories eh?

I wrote a virus called Downadup (aka Conflicker), and it kinda took the intertubes by storm. :/
I'm having problems with the API i made for it though, only 12% of the known infected systems (connectin to ma servers) are sending the right credit card #'s to me, all the rest are sending corrupted data.

Don't say that. Some Script kiddies will believe you and demand sources.
