Well I recently began switching 2 more computers to x64 so I began to wonder how many people here at BetaArchive use any x64 OS or 32 bit as there main and most used OS.

Then I also wanted to know for those of you in windows: Do you actually hunt down and use 64 bit applications? Especially 64 bit web browsers as they have no flash.

In my own code, I tend to like to memory map files (vs fopen and the likes), so a 64bit OS is a must.

I find that few programs are truly optimized for 64 bit processors which really gets me angry. Adobe still hasn't released a 64 bit lash player for windows either :(

I'm still using 32-bit OSes. I just hope x64 Windows 7 will still have full support for 32-bit applications but I do hope more applications will be in x64 code, because I keep seeing retailers sell 64-bit OSes.

I only switched to 64-bit on my desktop computer because I wanted to be able to use Windows server 7, and they don't make a 32-bit version. This ended up making more problems for me because now my scanner and modem don't have drivers, and x64 windows doesn't support DOS and 16-bit apps. Because of this, I'm reluctant to switch over any more computers.

I always used dosbox for the old games I imagine it would run other things.

New second thing I hate: Companies not making 64 bit drivers. luckily mine don't really have this problem :D

I have Windows 3.11 games and I'm too lazy to install WfW 3.11 in DOSBox/VPC.

All my x64 peripherals worked without issue except my scanner from 2000.

For the scanner I forced slightly modified -in the *inf- drivers from Epson's website that were made for a different model...

I always try to use a x64 OS. The 32bit emulation cuts down on some of the problems caused by poorly written hardware drivers.
AND
On a couple systems I need over 4 gigs of ram for a single application.

I've now got 2 computers both on X64 and on my laptop I have noticed the difference it feels just more responsive compared to 32-bit

Are we going to suffer just like those people who switch their OS and/or applications from 16-bit to 32-bit?
BTW, Windows NT 3.51 is really a pure 32-bit DOS Shell, in the same time, Windows 95, 98 is not a 32-bit OS in my opinion. How about Windows ME? I simply ignore it.

I use 32-bit because of some legacy DDK tools (masm386, cl16, link_60, link16, lib16, etc.)

Only thing stopping me from running 64bit firefox is lack of official flash support.

Since Vista, I am using x86_64...
Mainly, I need x86_64, as i've got 4GB memory. But I think its worth.
For example, java speed ups pretty nice.

I would use x86_64 in any case, if the pc has power enough.

Use windows 7, and firefox as 32 bit. Hardly any programs need 64 bit at the mo.

People just use 64 bit, for having 4 gb or more memory.

Well, it depends. There are certain apps, with native 64-Bit Versions, which gain more speed, as with 32-Bit.
Best example would be games. I know, its not much more, but it is a little bit.

I've gone completely x64. I think the main benefit is using more than 4 GB of ram, which databases and photo editing should benefit most. I'll be trying to get Oracle 11 x64 working on Win 7, my first attempt failed.

As have I. I just got my OEM copy of 7 x64 yesterday, and everything's working just fine. I'v got 64-bit winRar, 64-bit Firefox (Shiretoko) and iTunes x64. I'll probably also get the 64-bit office Tech Preview from connect.
So, Yeah, I've gone 64-bit.

At first I'm used Windows Vista x64. But that was to slow for me and there were some problems with missing drivers. But now I'm using Windows 7 and it's fast and I have no problems with the drivers. I think in the the time for x64 is coming and all users that have a chance to upgrade to x64 should do that.
