I don't want Norton, it's bulky and cumbersome (or at elast, it was last time I tried it)

I'm thinking either AVG or Kapersky, but.... mayhaps even McAfee, but, I don't really know

any suggestions as to a good, small overhead antivirus which isn't too heavy on the wallet?

Nod32 is pretty lightweight, and the price isn't too bad of you plan to buy it.
Personally, I don't use anti-virus programs...

Yeah, true.
I would go for Avira products, like the 9th version of Premium Security Suite.

Here is some info:

Quote:
Avira Premium Security Suite Version 9
As of December 16th 2008 the beta of the new Avira Premium Security Suite, version 9, is available.
The Avira Premium Security Suite is an integrated security solution for single users and SOHOs. The product features virus- and malware-detection, scanning of incoming and outgoing emails(POP 3, SMTP, Imap), AntiSpam and AntiPhishing and scanning of http-based internet traffic.

New features in version 9:

Parental control as add on to WebGuard
Imap support
Easy to use configuration wizard after setup
Enhanced self protection (registry, files, processes)
Http upload of quarantined files
One click repair feature for the On-Demand Scanner
Improved drive-by protection (integrated in WebGuard)
Netbook support (resolutions starting from 800x400)
WMI Support
Improved update system
Minimum system requirements:

- Windows 2000 SP4, Service Rollup 1
- Window XP 32 bit, SP2
- Windows Vista 32bit
- Windows 7

Note: 64 bit operating system have only limited support yet. Fully 64 bit compatible versions will be available at a later stage during the beta test.

It's really good and I haven't had any problems using it yet.

I personally go for CommonSense2009 (yes that means no protection at all [windows defender included]) works great, low ram usuage,. ;)

I did install mcafee on my xp computer after 2 years of use and it didn't find anything wrong.

Just for fun, install AVG Free 8 and scan you're pc. , if it's still virus free you can continue if you want, otherwise I suggest you keep the AV.

This would be a good sticky, as I remember this being asked a couple of times already, plus Google provides benchmarks from more reliable sources than anecdotes from here.

If you need my opinion, then use DOS with Lynx, available here - that should stop any drive-by attacks very well.

The VB 100 is generally one of the better Anti-Virus performance tests.

I'd say anything from Eset is good.

I used to swear by AVG, but after 7, I've had nothing but problems... So now I use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, I've yet to see something it couldn't catch.

Kaspersky and BitDefender are the best. I am personally using Kaspersky.

When my McAfee VS enterprise didn't work in 7 i stumbled upon http://www.av-comparatives.org/ and it gave me a decent foundation on which to base my decision. I personally went with NOD32.

I personally (and find the most useful) McAfee VS Enteprise 8.5. Always liked the features it provides (although sometimes the on demand scan can be a bit of resource hog). Only ran into a couple problems with it, but not enough to prevent from installing it on all my machines.

However since I'm using Windows 7 right now, I have AVG Free installed.

The use Internet Security name because it also protects against active threads from the internet and not only when it's scanned when it's already on the PC.
Also it includes an Firewall.

The Internet Security product is just the anti-virus plus the things mentioned above.
