What does GPRS connect at usually? Wikipedia says around 57kbps (dialup) yet Windows XP says around 460.8kbps when it connects. I'd do a speedtest(.net) but I haven't got a data plan on my phone yet, and 2.2c per kb charged in 10kb blocks is a little... much

I need a GPRS connection temporarily in the future for about 10 days and wondering if it is worth spending $150 on a 3G modem where I may or may not get coverage for speed.

Is your Mobile a Regular GSM or a Next-G Capable phone?

If regular GSM, then you will get a data speed below Dialup in Australia, as I've used GPRS on many occasions and I rarely ever saw it go above 1.2KB/s.

If your Phone is a NextG, then the modem inside is reporting the actual modem speed inside the phone, or it's a glitch.

I remember my old Dialup modem, XP would think it was "connect" at 128, but would only do the regular dialup speeds.

Suggest you just get a Prepaid 3G Modem, it's more worth it in the long run, and you wont have to deal with speeds below 1KB/s, which happens at times with GPRS.

Only GSM... used to have a 3G phone, not any more :/

If I can get an unlocked (or Optus compatible) 3G modem on eBay for a decent price, then I'd buy it, but for 10 days usage and probably none after that, I don't know if I can justify it

EDIT: my phone (LG KS360) IIRC is 2.5G. It supports EDGE but I don't think anyone here other than Telstra has an EDGE Network
