I just bought a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS but after reading reviews, I realize that I need a firmware update otherwise it will not be recognize by the BIOS after a number of reboots. I call Seagate support but after they put me on hold for 30 minutes, I gave up. I then emailed them requesting the firmware update but they have yet to respond. Unfortunately, the hard drive fail. I can get my hard disk replace as it is under warranty, but is there a way to recover money without paying money. I am really on a TIGHT budget, and after all it's Seagate fault.

I'm sorry, but no, you cannot get your data back without paying for some type of Recovery Service.

Seagate is only offering the return and replacement of the drive in question, and at the moment with the faulty firmware, the drive is basically that of someone taking a hammer to the circuit board and smashing it to pieces.

There are 2 ways of recovering the data; buying a second drive of the same type and taking to Platters from the Faulty Drive and putting them into the new drive...or paying a Recovery Firm to do it for you.

Ofcourse this is now, but you never know, maybe Seagate will give in (BAHAHAHA) and give people a voucher for a Recovery Service, but I don't think they will.

Sorry for that. :(

If your hard drive is not yet dead, contact and request SD1A Firmware from seagate.

I know you are on a tight budget, but the most affordable solution I can think of is to find a spare PCB board off eBay or some other auction site. The drive is not showing up under the BIOS, yes, but your data should still be on the drive itself. With all these drives dying before people are able to update the firmware, there are bound to be sellers on eBay looking to make money off of this, but in either case, it's cheaper than the alternative. You may expect to pay between $20 - $50 for a replacement PCB board. If you do take this route, make sure that the PCB board has the updated firmware, and if not, update it once you've attached it to your drive. Just a thought.... (H)

You can always burn it to CD and and boot from it; No 32bit windows required.

It turns out my drive has the CC1G firmware so I decided to try the tech support chat, i waited half and hour for an 'agent' to arrive. As soon as I asked about the firmware it end my 'session' without a reply and it won't let me join a chat again. Searching their forum doesn't help much as no one from Seagate will actually say what firmware you need and everyone has to go through tech support. They won't release the program to determine what firmware you need. I ended up making a support case and I should get a reply within 24 hours but reading their forums, no one seems to get a reply with if they have a 1.5tb hdd with this firmware.

I have to say this is the worst tech support I have used

___, I recommend you disconnect the disk until you get the new firmware. Anything could cause it to lock up and stop working completely, and cause you to lose your data.

Seagate support is terrible, they haven't sent me the firmware update YET. After all, I could lose the other one that I am using right now. Somehow, I don't imagine my next hard disk coming from Seagate.

That's quite disappointing for the biggest hard drive manufacturer in the world... I have a Seagate 250GB HD for more than two years and it's still going well

You may actually get lucky on the Data Recovery:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/18 ... _recovery/

I know it's about Data "Loss", but I'm pretty sure you can twist acouple of words to get them to recover your data.

I have the 500GB version. It is also affected but not as much. I am considering just grabbing a samsung or western digital 500gb and ditching this one as it just proves seagates are a bunch of lazy cheap b*st*rds.
