Need suggestions as to recovery software - must run in Windows. Paid software OK - deleted a folder from my hard drive about a week and a half ago and now I need it, yet GetData's Recover My Files is spitting out all random data at me which it hasn't done before

GetDataBack usually does a good job, look for an, ahem, paid version ... another good one to try is TestDisk and PhotoRec ... PhotoRec did a great job when I lost a set of pictures on a HDD, even after a reformat and using the disk for two weeks. However, the recoverability of data is always going to go down as you use the disk more.

Personally, I prefer R-Studio, as it supports RAID drives and can recover from multiple striped drives if needed. r-tt.com - the basic version is $79USD. It's really worth it if you end up doing lots of data recovery. It has saved my ass plenty of times. :P
