It's fairly easy actually. You install a patched uxtheme.dll into system32 and then you copy your new themes to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

After that it should be a question of selecting them in appearance.

Been a while since I last messed around with theming but iirc this is the procedure.

you need to use VistaGlazz (http://www.codegazer.com/downloads/VistaGlazzSetup.exe)

Last I heard, Vista Glazz had issues with SP1...

Like ddew said, find yourself a patched uxtheme.dll (If you can't find one, I should still have one somewhere, MSN me...) then placing themes in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes.

There are some pretty nice themes on Deviantart, I was looking at a nice Beta 1 theme the other day, wishing I had Aero...

You can get the necessary files (shsvcs.dll, themeui.dll, uxtheme.dll) from Rafael's site:

You don't need to use VistaGlazz, it's just an easy way of patching uxtheme as it does the nitty gritty work for you.

Basically, there are many ways to patch UXtheme. Using apps like vistaglazz will patch it for you on a click (and reboot) of a button, and is very popular and easy to do.

Alternatively go to http://www.withinwindows.com/uxtheme-patches/ and then download the version corresponding to your windows. Then you got to take ownership of the three UXtheme files, allow yourself to do all tasks with those files, rename the files, plonk the patched files, reboot. Should work (99% of the time, last time)

You also can use TuneUp Utilities. It does the trick somehow without patching anything.
