In regards to the AMD AM2 x2 5000+ processor, what Intel equivalent (or closest equivalent) is available... Just wondering - I prefer AMD for the price, about $86AUD for the 5000+ and $94AUD for the 5200+ whereas for $112AUD I get a Pentium DualCore E2200..

Also, would I be better off with an AMD or Intel processor? I currently have an AMD Sempron. I don't play games, and when I do, they're ooolllddd (we're talking GTA2 here). I convert about 2 videos a month when I'm burning them to DVD but I do that when I'm asleep anyway.

Choices choices choices...

from what google tells me, i would go with AMD. plus you won't have to change the motherboard (guessing it is AM2)

Mines Skt754, doesn't matter. I'm building a new system in the next couple of months and I just wanted something on the cheap that will do basic stuff...

Cheap = AMD
Performance = Intel

So you take your pick based on those two really. Intel have the lead in the market for performance, but as you say thats not really what you want, so AMD would be the better choice if money was an issue. I'd suggest going with Intel if you want a system that will last a few years without upgrading much.

My computers arent exactly powerhorses. I'm going on three years with this Sempron and my laptops only a Celeron.

edit: err, three years, brain isn't working anymore.

If you can find one, go for the X2 5000+ Black Edition (65nm 65w TDP Part: ADO5000IAA5DS). It should be almost the same price as a normal 5000+ but the Black Edition has an unlocked CPU multiplier making it a breeze to overclock without messing about with FSB and ram timings. A 5000+ B.E. will quite happily run at 3-3.2ghz. The only downside with them really is the L2 cache which is a measly 512kb per core compared to say the x2 6400 Black Edition which is 3.2ghz, 1mb L2 per core but doesnt overclock worth crap and costs twice as much. It doesnt come with a cooler though so you'd need to sort a half decent one out.

What test did you perform? In all real benchmarks I've seen Intel came out on top...

The PhenomII might be giving intel some competition but the Phenom was just rubbish as has been proven in just about any benchmark comparisons I've seen. In fact the Phenom 9850 was getting its ass kicked by the aging Q6600 to the point where Q6600 sales went through the roof when the Phenom was launched after those who were holding out for the TLB fixed Phenoms to hit the market realized just how poorly performing AMD flagship chips were, so Intel dropped the price of the Q6600 and all though it was still slightly more than the top Phenom chip, they could barely keep up with demand after the AMD bunch jumped ship.

Sorry Mate .... I am going to have to disagree I remember this stuff well:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/int ... 218-3.html

and all the fuss made over clocking cheap Celerons

well HD if your not an avid gamer, then your choice is really clear go for the cheaper setup .... and always buy as much memory as you can afford ...

my old Dell PE 400SC ran XP really nice on 3 Gb of RAM on a P4 2.4 Proc with a Nvidia 6600GT 256mb Video card
