my dads laptop bsods after loading the desktop (some icons in the tray even load) and this happened a bit after he last updated vista. the reason i dont think it was the update is because he was able to use it (restart and boot normally) after he updated.

anyways im in safe mode now and trying to figure out what is wrong. no mysterious odd startup programs as far as i can tell and im running a virus scan now.ive also tried system restore but when i reboot it gives me the same failure 9i set ti for the 25th well before any problems).

im really stuck on this one :/

edit: also did a memory test but everything came up good

Hmm uhh what are the specs? Do you know what updates were installed? Have you tried uninstalling them to see if that helps? I know with older versions of the ATI Catalyst drivers they would BSOD after the second or third reboot because of the Catalyst Control Center. I don't know if you have an ATI card in the laptop so...

You can try to do this:

Put the windows CD in (I do it always with the XP one), go to fix, type in chkdsk /f. This can use a little time.

Try to reboot it.
