Well, it might happen guys. I might get a new lappy. It wont be a high-class MacBook, nor will it be a shoddy Low-Grade Wal*Mart *nix laptop. It will most likely be a 400-somethin' dollar Acer. It might be a little shoddy, but its better than this ratshit I call a laptop.

Pentium Dual-Core - Vista Home Premium SP1

either that or another step down:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 1587727715 - AMD Athlon 64 x2 - Vista Home Premium SP1

Which seems like the better deal?

holy crap! Thats alot of video memory on the Pentium D. But the AMD Athlon can do Aero just as well. :P

The first one has more grunt but the second seems to list extra software but I would reccomend the grunt as its probably just more trialware. The second one has better graphics thought. By the way on their processor rating chart best buy have core 2 quads listed twice so they must have divided them into 6600 etc and 9300 and above or otherwise don't know that the very latest chips are core i7.

1. Acers arent shoddy
2. You'll only get all that video memory if
- you have a program that requires it (which will then use it on the fly)
- you actually have sufficient RAM free
3. PLZ DONT TALK LIKE A RETARD IN UR TOPIC KBAI

The Aspire is better with a better CPU & screen

That said, I were you I would buy the other one and with the 50USD saved, buy an extra battery.

Really,
Both are pretty terrible..
It will be difficult to do anything besides word processing on them.
So If I were you I would buy,
one of these;
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834115509

And pocket the 150USD saved.

That netbook doesn't look half bad.

The athlon 64 x2 laptop is better in my sense.
The Radeon X1200 graphic card will perform better in gaming and photoshop.
It has a smaller screen which saves space and should have a slightly lower power consumption.

But they are both pretty low class, consider buying something better in your situration allows. Unless your making it a cheap gift, I say make it cheap. :P

My experience has told me otherwise.

I had an Acer. Bought it about 2.5 years ago for 1,560 dollars. I turned it on one day and it had 25+ stuck/dead pixels on the screen. I had to send it in twice to get the screen replaced. When they did, they bent the bottom of the frame to hell. The screen wasn't even securely in the frame. When it was closed, the screen was sitting on the keyboard and after a few weeks, was scratched up (the old screen didn't have this happen after 9 months of use).

The DVD started to lose a bearing after 12 months (and I rarely used it) and started to scratch up CDs/DVDs.

The k button on the keyboard worked when it wanted to.

It was a POS. Three unrelated components having all these problems in one laptop. Friggin amazing. If they would put this much effort into making a good computer, they might be able to compete with IBM/Lenovo.

There's a reason why they're cheap.

And my experience has also told me otherwise.

Near to every teacher at my old Community College and at the moment my current University are mainly running on all Acer Laptops because of the rebates and discounts they get, and up to this point, they have no complained of a single problem with any of their computers.

Just because one person got a bad apple out of the bunch doesn't mean you rule the entire company out on just that one experience, if I did, I wouldn't bother buying from any big name companies at all.

EDIT: I added the Community College part because the teachers have the habbit of throwing their laptops in there cars/bags/ground and racing off to teach at another campus in a rush. Durable.

PS, get a HP one, mine is working nicely after 7 months. I seen many people have a HP laptop and it worked fine for them. The only problem is the glossy screen, it really sucks when I use it outside or with a dim screen. I could the sky and grass better than my email I was typing.
Other than that, it works well with vista, windows 7 build 6519 and hackintosh(just a test :)).

My main complaint with Acer is their customer service. I got jipped out of 4 months on my warranty.

I bought my laptop from Newegg in July of 2006. It was supposed to be for an entire year, but the warranty ended February of 2007.

Now that I think about it, the problems started in January of 2007. I was appalled by their crappy ability at fixing the problem. They replaced the screen, but bottom of the screen was all bend up, pretty badly.

Had I met the person who fixed the screen, I would have probably made sure he could never reproduce. It was a half-arsed job at fixing the problem. Just disgusting. Further more, the first time I sent it in, they sent it back and didn't do anything. 25 stuck pixels and they wrote that they couldn't find the problem. I saw it the second I turned on the computer.

If you don't mind spending a little bit extra, MacMall is having a closeout deal on the previous generation MacBooks (http://www.macmall.com/macmall/families/new_promo~dp~7404921~family~macbook~promo~12.asp). Say what you want about Apples, but that's a great deal on a great machine that'll run practically operating system under the sun. Another plus, Apple support tends to be one of the greatest around. You wouldn't regret the purchase.

Sounds like you need to do a simple reinstall, and you'll be golden, if that's what you think warrants buying a new laptop.
