Yeh, I hate it when there is a website a really, really do want to see, and the result is brought up by searching for the site on Google, but clicking the link brings up an error like what you have just mentioned.

BTW, when you search for something on Google, why is it that Google sometimes brings up links to things that ''no longer exist'' for example?! :X

Googles results are determined by a combination of popularity, relevence (based on simular words), how many pages with simular words link to it, and if the page is somehow related to a page that matches your search. Until it completly stops getting hits, or other pages become more popular or relevant, then google will continue to display said page.
You hate it?, Chances are theres someone up late at night, frantically trying to work out what has gone wrong. How about a little symphathy?

Not quite, they check the links, every index, and if it's offline, it'll then remove it.

You can always click on "Cached" underneath the result on Google and it will display the page as it was when Google last indexed it.

So /vetusware then. That site became a load of crap when they started requiring users to actually sign up, and they removed half the files too. Add that to it's not actually maintained properly anyway and you get a site that's practically. Now, if people like, I can try and get all the software that is of interest together, myself, and put it up for download on my own website? For free - no signup required?

Yeah cause I'm sure you'll want to pay the extra couple of hundred a month for the [censored] load of bandwidth you'll use, so a couple of kids can get omgwindows101freee!!!

And then you have to find a VPS/Dedi/Hosting Provider which actually allows you to offer it.

1. My server provider allows unlimited space and bandwidth, which I'm paying for and not currently using.
2. The provider has not had any problems with me hosting Chicago 58, 122, Windows 1.0 and a load of other stuff do far, and I've been nearly 2 years with them.

1. Thanks for posting 3 times over, I can read it once.
2. The provider hasnt had any problems _so far_. Once you start going into the hundreds of GB of data/mth they're going to be like WTF is he uploading, go thru your [censored], find your Windows 1.0, delete it and charge you for excess bandwidth.

And no, you don't have unlimited space and bandwidth. If you really did your 'webhost' would probably go broke.

OVH offers some great webhosting deals with dedicated servers, lots of hardware options and a 100/100 uplink with no quota and limitations. The only limitation they offer is that on their gigabit connections they put you on a 100mbit cap if you abuse it. They're cheap too and don't seem to really care what you're using the server for. There are some rules naturally, like childporn and stuff but otther than that they're pretty lenient.

But, also as well, what gets me, how Google can show samples from websites that require you to be registerd to view it, but Google dosen't have to be.

And Happy Dude's point number 2 is right. Though so is ddew. You'd need to have a dedicated server to even stand a chance of pulling that one off though.

@Squidward_ It's most likely bot permission issues on the site/forum. Bot's have their own permissions often.

Doesn't BA also require users to sign up and than contribute to get access to servers with files? The only differences are that (1) we can contribute in several ways and people over vetusware only by uploading new software or reporting fakes/broken links and that (2) after someone here already made his contribution, has unlimited access to servers and on vetusware the number of downloads/day is limited and depends on kind and number of contributions.

Also, who is your server provider?

Are you sure? When I type in the website I get a blank page, the when I put /login/ after that, it gives me a 404. So it's probably online, but it's not accessible.

Last I remembered their download limit it was a simple clear of the cookies to reset the download limit.

Continuing on with abandonware sites - some users here on BA we're members on Abandoned - the dedi for that cost quite a few hundred a month - even $600 a month at one point. Went through about 6TB for a couple of months...

Most we've ever done has been 3TB and most of that was torrents before the DC stopped allowing them.

I once came across an unprotected FTP server full of Longhorn and Linux and material, just by typing the right thing into Google.

Oh, and about Hounsell saying about bots getting through the permissions on forums, could that happen here?

Abandoned was unusually popular, even after I deleted 600 accounts there was still over 1000 O_o
