What do you mean with Upgrade?

- Software : Only updates and service packs, until the next RTM release
- Hardware: Almost never, mostly more memory/videocard/external storage, this has happend once.

And you?

Software: Automatic updates for Windows, everything else gets updated every time I reload my PC.
Hardware: When it breaks... or 5-6 years if it hasn't broken yet. Laptops get updated more often.

Software: Usually when a new version provides a sufficient amount of new features. Like Office 2007 compared to 2003 or Vista Ultimate compared to XP Pro.

Hardware: Depends on which machine. The servers tend to stay stock except for the occasional ram upgrade. My desktops I upgrade to fit what I'm currently working on. Recently I've become a huge fan of Matlab so a fast cpu and tons of ram was a worthwhile upgrade.

I rarely upgrade. I don't [censored] away every dollar i make on computer [censored] unlike all the children I encounter online. I can work perfectly fine on a P4. I don't require the highest end graphics to play some shitty games, thus, I use my money to pay bills and buy liquor.

[censored] kiddos, he's older than you, RUN! Let me tell you, liquor is a much better thing to spend money on than computer crap. </sarcasm>

Well, since I work in the business, got access to a lot of hardware (through beta testing and work) I upgrade quite a lot. But I don't upgrade all my computers all the time. Some machines stay as-is since when they work I'll just keep them humming about until they become too slow or break down. So on average:

Gaming machines: about two-three times a year (GPU, CPU swapout)
Work machines: once every 1-2 years, might change CPU or add more RAM over time
Lab machines: About once a month. Always a new beta project, and I sometimes get to keep the hardware (which goes into my gaming machines or the for-sale ads), or I send back the hardware and get it swapped for new hardware. I do have two OLD lab machines left for old apps and games.
Laptop: Until they break down or get too slow. My oldest laptop still in use is a 8086 3Mhz machine. My newest uses a 3GHz quadcore C2Q.
Server: When they break down or when I get a better mobo :P

I rarely upgrade the RAM on my machines since I tend to max out the RAM when I get the hardware. And only my workstations get HDD upgrades, gaming machines are built for GPU speed and HDD reading speed and not for size whereas workstations are built for raw CPU speed and large amounts of storage space. Server also gets HDD expansions.

It all depends on where the hardware is needed, what it's needed for and what kind of hardware I get access to.

I swap out components every 2 to 3 years. Mostly, I just add more RAM or swap out video cards.

Yeah, god forbid people actually spend cash on their hobbies. Besides, if you can't afford bills, upgrades as well as liquor on a salary you might want to look for another job.

I was on a 4-year cycle. Recently though (past few years), paying for school, gas, moving, essentials, etc. left me a little drained, even with a job. I need a new PC & Mac. Hopefully Ill get one by `09 or earlier.

Hardware: Semi-annually, and I can never afford the high-end equipment

Work/Other Peoples
Software: Almost never, recently installed SP3 on the computer at work :D
Hardware: Never! I wait until they die..

Upgrades? Hardly never - usually RAM and thats about it. mdogg, you should try it, it feels good having more RAM :P

A new computer usually 3 or 4 years (unless my computer dies before)

I tend to upgrade my hardware on my desktop twice a year, but then it's generally only something like More RAM/HDD Space/Graphics Card, the core of the system generally 2-3 years.

With laptops, I do prefer to just use them till I can no longer do what I want on them (unlikely, I tend to use laptops just for the internet or other simple tasks) or they break (seriously though, my EeePC has a damaged screen and I still use it probably more than any other PC)

And a HD 4870 to play STALKER a few weeks ago.

I tend to balance things out between computer and camera gear upgrades, next up is camera, I'll be getting a 28mm f/2.8 and later a 80mm f/1.8 USM. Then it's camera-upgrade, 5D.

I seem to use my laptop more than anything, even before I got this new one. I bought a new PC and a new laptop within a few weeks of each other. I used the desktop loads when I first got it but now I use it mainly for games, since it was designed to be a gaming only PC anyway. The laptop is just quieter, and it uses a lot less electricity (6x less). Since electricity costs have shot up recently its been a godsend.

I upgrade when I need to. My current desktop and laptop are high end modern computers, and shouldn't need an upgrade for 2-3 years unless I want to run something they won't cope with. I would only upgrade if this happened or if the PC broke.

I gutted a P3 & Shuttle MB PC about 3 months ago & installed everything new incl PS, reused the case only.

Before that its been 2.5 years since I built a completely new rig & before that I would replace the MB, CPU & RAM every year.

I now have 4- desktop PC's in my home, 2- test rigs (quad booting), a WHS rig & my Main Rig, triple booting w/ XP PRO, Vista Ult x64 & x86.

I generally will backup, format & reinstall the OS that gets used the most every 1.5 years now, a clean install is sure nice.
