im looking for an external laptop battery for my toshiba satellite, ever since i got it, the thing only lasts ~ 15 minutes tops on a full charge, lowest brightness, and best power saving settings (and it wasn't covered by warranty) 15 minutes isn't going to be enough for a bus ride from NY to Chicago

ive looked at toshiba's website, a new battery with the same specs as mine is like $100, and the one thats only marginally better is $150, any suggestions? (it has to be more than 4000 mah, since thats what my current battery is rated)

Did you buy it brand-new and the battery was like that? That shouldn't have to be covered under warranty, that would be a defective part. Even though your battery is rated 4000 mAh, that doesn't mean that it actually is. Chances are that a brand new battery from Toshibaa, even the $100 one is going to last at least a couple of hours depending on what you are doing. 15 minutes is terrible though, there is no way that is how it was meant to perform. I would call Toshiba and tell them it's been like that since you bought it (if it has) because they should replace it for free if it's their fault.

i had to call them once about a broken screen, there response was "warranty covers anything inside the machine, the casing, battery, and screen aren't covered",and im not planning for it to last like 24 hours, just long enough to play a couple dvds and some NES, im guessing the ride cant be more than 7 hrs, so ill read for a bit as well

offtopic: i checked the processor speed in power saving mode, 900 mhz, how can that eat up so much energy?

Batteries are generally covered for 6 months under warranty. A 4000mAh battery should make any laptop last at least 2 hours in power saving mode.

I got an external battery and it cost me $140, but it lasts ~4 hours on my laptop, plus the laptops internal battery (my old one was <1 hour when I bought the external battery, my new one is 3 hours+ without it).

Mine was a generic "no-brand" battery.
