What is Elisa?

Elisa is an open source cross-platform media center connecting the Internet to an all-in-one media player.

It looks very VERY nice, worth a try and a hack. I really despise GStreamer but that can easily be replaced (depending on the amount of python actually used).

I still think XBMC blows everything else out of the water. It works on Xbox, Windows, OS X, and GNU/Linux. Possibly soon it will run on PS3. There is also a Live Linux distro out there that is just XBMC. It's open-source, it's been around for years, and it plays practically every format video/audio file you can possibly think of. It includes the same visualization engine that Winamp uses, which was already the best IMO. The entire interface is 100% skinnable using XML files. There is support for python scripting. Some scripts let you search and view Youtube and tons of other online video websites. There are scripts to do everything. You can listen to shoutcast radio, rip CDs from within the interface, native last.fm support the list goes on and on. Unfortunately it's not finished yet, still you might be interested in downloading the pre-release version. The most impressive thing about it is the number of different audio/video formats it plays. I haven't run across a single file it hasn't been able to play yet. If you have ripped movies or TV shows it will automatically download info about them along with pictures from various websites and gives you the option of viewing that info/pictures in a library view. It can even be controlled via Wii controllers, IR sensors, your iPhone, a built in web server which let's you control it from anywhere on your home network/the internet. It also has multiple user support. Check out: http://xbmc.org/
