I'd also like to know how to install Vista without a DVD drive. The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive, but I want to try Vista on it.

You could always order an internal DVD drive and an IDE-USB converter. It would probably cost a bit more than the alternative discs but it's useful for more than just installing Vista.

That would only work if their computers allowed boot from USB though.

If you have a legit non-OEM product key you can order the 5-CD set from Microsoft. It may also be worth trying copying the contents of the DVD to a network folder (and then to the laptop's hard drive if large enough) and beginning the installation from a running copy of Windows on the laptop, having them on the machine's hard drive and doing it that way certainly worked with Server 2003, haven't tried with Vista or from a network folder.

Well can someone who has the alternate media upload it online? And if you order the alternate media, how much is the shipping and can you order one for Vista Ultimate?

£6.71 + tax (17.5%) in the UK, $9.95 US and no mention of additional taxes. All the Vista editions come on the same discs, Ultimate will be installed if you enter an Ultimate key when installing (the discs will have the name of the edition that the key used to order it with is for printed on them, but the actual contents of the discs are the same whatever they say on them).

Split the WIM with imageX. As an example

Code:
imagex /split X:\sources\install.wim 640

Then grab 5 blank CDs, and put all of the installer files and install.swm (inside sources) on the first CD. CD2 gets \sources\install2.swm, CD3 \sources\install3.swm, and so on.
