i just bought a compaq laptop with per-installed vista basic, how do i find out what the administrators password is? thx
Isn't Vista's Administrator account disabled by default?

Try Computer Managment "compmgmt.msc" and enable the Administrator account under Users. Maybe you can override the account's password as well.

Administrators account on Vista is disabled by default.

Open Computer Management --> Local Users/Groups --> Users, open Properties of Administrator.

Then disselect: USER ACCOUNT IS DISABLED.

Then you can log off and log in with Administrator and no password.

Download yourself an OPHcrack live CD/ISO
Might come in handy one day...

Code:
What is ophcrack?
Ophcrack is a free Windows password cracker based on rainbow tables. It is a very efficient implementation of rainbow tables done by the inventors of the method. It comes with a Graphical User Interface and runs on multiple platforms.

Features:
» Runs on Windows, Linux/Unix, Mac OS X, ...
» Cracks LM and NTLM hashes.
» Free tables available for Windows XP and Vista.
» Brute-force module for simple passwords.
» LiveCD available to simplify the cracking.
» Loads hashes from encrypted SAM recovered from a Windows partition, Vista included.
» Free and open source software (GPL).

(A bit off topic but..) I noticed that disc has brute-force modules, do you know what it uses to crack? I highly doubt rainbow tables would be suffice for most jobs, which is why i'm wondering if there is something like that but that uses something like john to crack hashes?
