I download stuff for my PowerBook on a PC. I put the .SIT and .HQX files on a diskette and put the diskette in the Mac but the Mac doesn't read the diskette. How do I make it read the files on the diskette.

Are you sure that the floppy drive works?

Does the PowerBook have PC Exchange installed? If it doesn't, you can format and use the floppy disk as a Mac floppy using Gemulator Explorer or TransMac.

The floppy drive works (even though it's very loud) and how do I use Gemulator Explorer or TransMac?

TransMac is pretty straight-forward. Simply run it and select your floppy as the Mac drive. Then, you'll have your files on top and the Mac floppy on the bottom. Drag files to copy them over. When TransMac asks how to copy the file (after you drag it), select "BinHex files" for .HQX files, "MacBinary" for .BIN files, and "Data files" for any other kind.

What do you mean select your floppy as the Mac drive? And should the floppy be formatted as a Mac floppy diskette?

You need to first format it as a Mac floppy (there's an option in the Tools menu). Then, you select your floppy at the checkbox at the top of the Mac file display:
