My computer is getting rather hot, too much stuff and not enough circulation (i have bought better case fans) are the main reasons, but i am thinking of buying a new cpu fan/heatsink. I currently have a athlon x2 5200+ on stock cooling and i plan on buying a phenom soonish (probably quad). don't tell me to go intel as i don't want to change/buy a new motherboard. the rest of my specs are:

5gb ddr2-800
8800gtx (768mb)
pci-e sound blaster card
wireless card
dvd drive
blu-ray drive
1tb, 500gb, 250gb, 120gb hdd's
750w psu

so what would be the best option? my computer beeps sometimes when i was lanning at a mates, which i know is problem. do hard drives make much heat as i will probably remove the dvd drive and the 120gb as they are IDE?

Your case fans, which direction do they blow? They should be blowing air in at one end and air out at the other. Front = In, Back = Out.

Also, change the heat paste on the heat sink and make sure no dust is obscuring the heat sink fins. Stock cooling should work fine for the CPU, it was after all designed for it. It just sounds like you've had it so long the heat paste has dried out and isn't as effective as it should be now. For the sake for a few $ its worth doing that than replacing the whole heat sink and fan.

It would go on room temp as the fans will take in from the room, so if your room is warm expect higher temps.
It would be worth it to get a zalman cpu cooler like: http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/Pro ... sp?Idx=308
And try and get the biggest fan at the back of the case to make airflow

Yeah, seriously. Just go pay $10 for an overpriced tube of cheap thermal compound from Best Buy. I'll vouch for the fan thing too. Unless you have two fans right next to each other, a good rule is to make every fan blow inwards except one.

the fans are the right way around, the fan i ordered just arrived so i will install it. the room temperature at my friends house was rather warm so it was probably the reason.

what paste would you recommend, or are they all the same?

All pastes generally do the same with no advantages over the more expensive ones. The ambient temperature of my loft hits 32*c sometimes during the day (its very well insulated) and my home server is up there. Now, its a celeron, and has a stock cooler (and a poor one at that) and it doesn't overheat in those temperatures, so it must be the paste or the heat sink is clogged with dust. There is no other reason why it should overheat, even in such high ambient temperatures.
