Main page of the BBC News website shows a burning tank and the headline "Russian Forces Battle Georgians".

The only way to end this conflict is only if the Russians did the same thing that NATO did to Serbia in 1999: Bomb strategic targets in Georgia to force the Georgians to the negotiating table.

Also keep in mind Putin and Medvedev are both smashing a bottle of Vodka with Bush in China at this time.

The way to end the conflict is simple, russian army comes and makes a Pridnestrovie like region...
This is step 1 comming in...

Sadly, Russia can not recognize the country they created because of their situtation with Chechnya.

Consequently, fear of setting a precedent combines with a moral and recently legal obligation to create an unfortunate state of stagnation.

Ultimately, its all very unfortunate. :(

This is really worrying. The conflict has been on our news over here in Nueva Zealandie quite a bit. I really hope anyone here associated with either country is not endangered by this.

That said, our local newspaper promised gang action in the city for about two weeks, but because it got so high-profile the gangs didn't bother and everything was real quiet, which was a real downer.

From what I gather, this is an escalation of Georgia's attempts to break off from Russia, as it has been trying to do for the last decade or so? If so, is it similar to the IRA, with the population's support, or similar to the Taleban in Afganistan?

Whatever the motion, I hope this doesn't end up with those fighting for liberation losing.
