I don't own either of these handheld consoles but I have seen both in action. The PSP with Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories and the Nintendo DS with New Super Mario Bros. I entered a competition a few years ago to get a Nintendo DS, New Super Mario Bros. game, a Mario beanbag and something other Mario related things. However I never got a reply from them so I'm guessing I didn't win.

All in all, I'm not exactly sure which one I'd choose. Probably the PSP just because it's a Playstation and I've used and am familiar with the Playstation series.

I wonder if Microsoft will make some sort of handheld Xbox. :^)

Go for PSP. I have both and PSP is way better. The touch screen is more anoying than useful imo. The graphics are much better in the PSP too. And if you use hacked firmware you get a lot of possibilities.

I can imagine the PSP's bigger screen is an advantage over the dual screen that Nintendo offers then.

PSP ftw!
custom firmwares are the only way to use a PSP properly, without it, people wouldn't have:

1)MapThis (combination google maps reader and GPS locator)
2)furikup (Skype phone for non-PSP slim owners)
3)IR shell/IR commander (make syer original model PSP a universal remote)
4)all of those emulators (now there is a Dreamcast emu in the works...)

funny story, a while back someone released a DS emulator for the PSP, it was slow as heck, but just the thought of it is hilarious

My thoughts exactly. My vote goes to the PSP. You forgot to mention that with custom firmwares you can play PS1 games.

I like the PSP but i vote other.

I'm waiting for this: The Pandora http://www.openpandora.org/

Here's a vid comparing it to the DS: http://youtube.com/watch?v=QZSuzR3uM6k

But its not yet out. It will be a very good handheld. Dev's have been reported to have overclocked them to 900mhz. It already has fullspeed PSX emulation. It's also going to be running Linux.

Pandora = PortablePC + Gaming Console lol

On the iPhone, the games must be more difficult to play because you don't actually have any buttons to push. Plus, half the screen would have to be filled with the controls. I've never actually tried to play any games on the iPhone, but that's the impression that I get.

SuperMonkey Ball uses the accelerometer entirely. Cro-Mag rally uses the accelerometer for turning, and 2 small on screen buttons for speed. Those are the only two "paid" apps I have and both are good. All the others are free apps like puzzles and stuff so don't have controls.

you can play PS1 games on an unmodded PSP, you just have to pay for them, and the selection is much smaller

Paying? I don't think so!

Modded Playstations FTW!

I didn't even think about that. 8) I'm curious to try it now.

My DS is alright, but I want the memory card thingy cause I pretty much have all the ROMs

As for a normal console, modded PS1 <3

I'd take a look at the GP32, GP2X and the rumoured-to-be-coming-soon GP3X just for their modability. Not used any of them myself but I'd really like to play with one just to see what I could make it do. Also interested in the Pandora that Dr Eggman mentioned but I'm not putting money on if/when it's coming out.

Personally, I feel the DS is the better console. With modded firmware and a flash cartridge, I can run emulators, a PDA program, and even run Linux! (The text on the command line is way too small to be practical, though)

Playing old-fashioned Super Mario Bros. in a NES emulator on the DS would be something fun to try.

You can do all of that on a PSP as well, just in case you didn't know. In fact, there are GPS navigation, VoIP, instant messengers/skype, Shoutcast, streaming music and video over wireless, and tons of other homebrew apps for PSP.

You can emulate and play every console up to PSX and N64. Although I imagine the N64 will never work well.

Theres a vast array of emulators for the iPod Touch/iPhone too, although last time I used the PSX one it was unplayable.

Not to mention they would take up much of the screen. Maybe if someone made a hardware controller add-on somehow. Even playing some of the emulators on PSP is kinda complicated not having the original controller. I say the original Xbox is still the #1 moddable console of all time.
