Like someone else, I want to emulate what it would be like if Longhorn RTMed at 4xxx, I chose 4015, because I have all the stuff for it ;), so...How do I change the Windows XP Build tag?

I tried changing it to:

Windows Longhorn Home
Build 4015.longhorn_sp1_rtm.051766-4015 (Service Pack 1)

but it keeps going back to the original :|

Help?

Admin edit: I've edited the subject to be more descriptive. "I want to..." tells users nothing and won't yield very good search results.

Where in the OS are you changing that info? You'll have to edit the resources of the ntoskrnl, and the registry [AFAIK]. There may be more files to edit to say that build string...

Well, I just wanted to change it in the main Windows areas, (About Windows, Desktop)

:P

I could just make it look like:

Windows Longhorn
Build 4015 RTM

win32k.sys for the build tag ;)

and yeh, Winver you can do through the shell32.dll.

Edit, Just looking at my own modified XP:
When Editing Win32k.sys, Resource Hacker has a habit of breaking it, meaning your install may not boot, so I recommend using something else (I use PE Explorer myself)

For Build tag on desktop:
(using PE Explorer's Resource Tree)
Top Line is Message Table -> 1 -> 0x000000D2
Bottom Line is Message Table -> 1 -> 0x000000D3

(Using Resource Hacker's Tree)
Top Line is Message Table -> 1 -> 1033 (In English XP) -> 210
Bottom Line is Message Table -> 1 -> 1033 (In English XP) -> 211

For WinVer:
Open Shell32.dll

Using PE Explorer's Resource Tree:
String -> 4 -> 60

Using Resource Hacker's Tree:
String Table -> 4 -> 1033 (In English XP) -> 60

Either disable the Windows system file protection before replacing the files or use this script: Replacer
