My system has recently been infected by loads of viruses i had been using panda 2008 which seemed quite efficient to me but since the viruses did get through just means its not good enough so i thought id ask you guys if you could suggest a good antivirus which does not slow down my system and does not compromise on security too so i can use it later on but right now i really need any antivirus that would just clean out my system of all those viruses since i have a lot of important data which i cannot loose.Pls help

I use Avast, mainly because it's free and i have something i don't understand against using AVG (the other free antivirus.

They're both pretty much identical.

Have you gon into safe mode to scan for viruses, or been doing in just in normal windows?

ah, man. you need an antivirus that runs well in safe mode - you've got a much greater chance of totally removing a virus in safe mode thna normal windows, because there's a way higher chance it's not running/protecting itself.

I already mentioned two: Avast! (http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html) and AVG (http://free.avg.com/)

I personally use (and love) Avast.

The Ephemeral between existance and non-existance: AKA "being"

Favourite OS
Rhapsody, BeOS
I like Symantec Corporate because it doesn't use lots of resources and I have gone without an infection for 3 years...

I'd put my hands on the fire for AVG
It runs smoothly. You won't even notice it, and, the best! It removes any virus you may get!
I've got no infections since I got internet at home!
xD!
Great one, And free

I don't like AVG Free Edition because it keeps popping up with dialog boxes that download updates and then coming up with "Update successfully installed" messages. It gets extremely irritating. I like silent updates compared to annoying updates.

Have you tried the configuration? You can turn off all the visual signals and schedule the updates for any period you like (I believe the default is every 4 hours)

AVG 8 won't ever pop a window unless you manually update.
It's simply great!

Here's a new one - A-squared. It is an earlier spin off from AVG some years ago. The company has now developed the program to it's full potential and is promoting it. It has some very intersesting and useful features.
Like AVG, you can download and try the personal version or, if you want to do a bit of extra work, they are offering 1 year licences aro8nd the web. Her is one with the instructions.
http://www.ghacks.net/2008/03/10/free-a ... r-license/

Beware, pirate program users. This has a very develish Dbase and can offer to erase those swap over .exe files and cripple your pirate programs. You have the option of ticking them, though, before that happens. (But surely noone on this site isusing such programs huh?)

No, for me it continuously did it whether I wanted it to or not.

No I never checked any settings which is probably why I didn't find anything. Either way, I'm not using AVG currently so it doesn't matter.

I just switched from AVG 8 to Avast. for about 2 weeks my computer would hang for 2 minutes at the desktop and only load icons and the taskbar if i hit control alt delete. avg and clamwin both found nothing. spybot s&d and adaware found a few items but it didnt help. I used rootkit revealer... nothing. I read an article by pc magazine that rated a few free antivirus programs and avg cam out with the lowest detection rate. avast found a virus and now I have no problems booting.

It's ace. Not to mention the scary-as-**** alarm that goes off when a virus is found, especially when it does it through realtime protection and not during a scan.

I always turn off the sounds because sometimes I have the speakers turned up high trying to listen to something that's a bit quiet and then it comes blaring out "VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED!!!".
