OK, so basically, I want to buy a dedicated server... yes, I can afford it... (I don't need you all spamming this thread with are you sure you can afford it etc)

Can anyone suggest a company that sells dedi's (that I, as a customer in Australia can buy) - it CANNOT be OVH as they don't allow customers outside of EU.

I'd be happy to resell you an OVH server since I've known you for so long... Talk to me on msn about it.

fasthost is very very expensive for what you get I reckon. The specs are terrible. From OVH, half that price and you get better specs.

Indeed.
OVH are very impressive on the whole Price-to-what-you-get ratio.

Just been looking at fasthosts. The pipe speed on the cheapest dedi is... wait for it... 512Kbps!!! I have that at home!!!

Just as a question, what are you planning on doing with this dedicated server?

BURSTNET has some sales going on right now, I've used their networks in the past and was pretty satisfied.

I've been hosting some stuff that my current provider doesn't like. Does the provider of the dedi check whats on the server?

Dedicated servers cannot be accessed by any host unless they have reason to and you provide the password or they take it offline and access the hard disk another way. This is reason BA remains online ;)

While those methods are true, and adding in the fact if your on a UNIX box, they can just single user mode it, most dedi and VPS providers do reserve the right to pretty much "dig through your [censored] at anytime". The only way you can be sure your servers will not be touched is to use your own hardware and never authorize a DC to access it in any way, and even then some facilities will move your hardware, or log into it/access hd data without your permission, whether or not due to court order or for their own enjoyment, which is why you should go with a reputable company.

ADD: OVH has also had a datacentre fire years ago, so I wouldn't really trust them, but that's me.

I'd have thought most DC's will have had fires but remember The Planet had a transformer explosion, something you can't easily predict will happen. All DC's have gas fire prevention extinguishing systems so the fire can't easily spread.

OVH have too many servers to randomly go routing through your data so you can be pretty sure its not going to be looked at unless they have reason to.

ThePlanet's pricing is also outrageous, they'd never get my money either.

I agree. High cost, low bandwidth, poor hardware. I would rather go elsewhere.
