Name says it all, what features would you like to see in microsofts next o.s?
I would love to see coloured preview panes as seen in vista builds like 5112 and 5219, however i'd really just be happy with the DEATH OF THE VISTA BASIC THEME!

but thats me, what do YOU want?

I look forward to some features already implemented in Windows 7, like Libraries and Multi-touch. But I hope that they will fix issues of Windows Vista and make it simply better. That's all Windows needs today, I think.

Because it sucks.
There would be no problem in adapting the Vista Aero style to the classic XP-way of rendering it.
Many many themes for XP prove that it's possible.

Even the transluent start menu would be possible. As it was shown in Longhorn 50xx builds ;)

The longhorn gui, even without aero is well thought out, and clean.
The vista basic theme on the other hand is poorly laid out, ugly coloured, and the trademark of vista. The vista basic theme is the symbol of how microsoft took a great, creative operating system, full of great features and stripped it bare, thus destroying windows vista. :x

Plus: the vista basic theme is the colour of toilet water :P

On the topic of Longhorn themes, the Slate Refresh is my favourite. As depicted in the July 2008 Desktops, my computer had, when it was running XP, the Slate Refresh theme.

A feature where anyone that bitches about Vista running slowly on their 5 year old computer it locks them out and forces them to install Linux.

I think you talk not about Longhorn GUI, but about the whole Longhorn UX. And it's almost impossible withouth applicable platforms, which will not be ready with Windows 7 release. So it's useless to ask about such things while they theoritically can't be implemented, I think.

Oh god that would be great.

When Vista came out I had like 5 friends come to me asking for me to help them. I said what's so hard about installing a new OS. Well, they were all trying to install it on 800mhz to 1.2ghz systems. When I got to their houses to help them out, and saw the computers they were using, I basically told them it wasn't going to run well and to get a new computer.

In the end if you are trying to run an OS on the bare minimum, you aren't going to like the experience.

On topic, I would like to see better hardware support when Windows 7 ships to retailers. Before Vista shipped they had that program that would scan your computer and check for compatibility. It said my dad's computer was fine, however, that wasn't the case when he went to install it :(

Regarding the original question, I would like it if they didn't have any of this software incompatibility. It gets annoying having to upgrade Nero when I've got Nero Digital 6.6 Ultra Edition sitting right next to me.

Sorry, i was just trying to be funny, it wont happen again

@Bigern1990: i feel your pain on both of those points, but compatibilty is just as much the hardware vendors responsibilty as it is microsofts.
And off topic a little, i'm fine with people trying to use vista on crummy pc's, what i'm not cool with is them begging me to give them vista, and ignoring me wenever i tell them its a mute point.

I think what I am trying to say is, we need better launch support.

Of course, when it comes out some things here and there won't work perfectly, some odd pieces of hardware won't work, etc. However, we need other companies to step in a take it upon themselves to realize that people are interested in new Operating Systems. If they were to start development on hardware support for an OS that is going to be released, when said OS is released people can buy their hardware without worry.

A synchronisation option for school, work, home etc. like they had in windows 98 (workmap), a new explorer, that it work faster with slower computers, and most of all:

A free anti-virus program!

I would like to see a tabbed explorer window! That would be nice!

Also i would like to see that microsoft removes compatibly to Windows ME or later software - to increase Performance and reduce bugs.

I don't think it really works like that, software is written for Win32 and so often works on both 9x and NT, though most newer programs use features not present in the older versions which is why you get errors when trying to run such programs on older versions that it can't find the required entry point in one or more of the system files. Older Win32 software will always run on newer versions on Windows as long as they keep the WOW64 subsystem that allows you to run 32-bit programs on 64-bit Windows.

I hope they put the title back into Explorer windows. Explorer is the only program without a title in its window.

I would love to see a lot of things in Windows 7 like a better non areo theme. I mean Windows Vista basic is complete rubbish. Also I would like to see a redesign of areo. A little more color also vibrancy. Also one thing should be chucked UAC is so annoying. No one likes it it's just a burden. On top of that better driver support and a faster more responsive system. Common Microsoft make me stop using my Mac with Windows 7 and I'll buy 4 copies!

LOL, I would 100% endorse this feature.
