Hey y'all. I will be moving to upstate NY from CT on June 1. I will be a permanent resident of NY and attending my dream college. My family will miss me a lot especially it had been 22 years! I am youngest and first to move out of state and living 7hrs away! I will keep you posted on how things are going.

Advice from someone who's done the moving out thing:

Stock up on toilet paper. I'm talking 48 rolls here, minimum. It's usually the last thing you think about, but one of the biggest things you'll need.

Emergency rations. If you have an unexpected car bill or injury, you may find yourself short on cash for food. Go to Wal-Mart (or similar) and spend $20 on different flavors of ramen (it should get you about 150 packages). Stick them somewhere you won't have to look at them; if you decide to eat them all the time, you'll get sick of ramen pretty quick. You might pick up the Cooking with Ramen cookbook. I'd also get two large boxes of instant rice, a large bag of sugar, and some sort of rice cookbook (I've been down to nothing but rice before - non instant - and if you're ever in the situation the sugar makes it a hell of a lot better. Of course, I would probably eat the rice once a week, it goes great with milk, butter, and sugar, like a cereal).

If you're like me and my roommate were, find as many cheap throw rugs as you can and cover all the carpets. Get plastic under there too. We threw a lot of parties, and the carpet got pretty stained.

TAKE PICTURES. Take pictures of every part of the apartment under high lighting. Any slight stains in the carpet, any bumps or holes in the wall, anything that doesn't work, take a picture. Make sure you note on the inspection worksheet (they will give you one) every last single little problem - even if the light switch plate is cracked. Make sure you get two copies of the form for yourself, and put the pictures on a disc - place the disc and one copy in an envelope and mail it to yourself. If they decide to take any of your deposit away, you'll need this in court.

Buy two or three extra towels, put them in your closet. Spills will probably happen, and when they do, your towel is the first thing someone will grab to clean it up.

Most importantly, get to be good friends with all your neighbors. If you decide to have a party, makes it a lot easier.
