I know that, but I thought that something had gone wrong with my browser (like it was in high contrast mode or something)...Still, it's a very clever bit of design by Google.

Now... how to get that to be displayed all the time...

BTW, that only saves power on CRT's. It should use more power than normal on an LCD.

it doesnt matter on sinve the LCDs would be on if they show black or white.
a CRT uses alot more power, so even if it saves some, its still doesnt help

There is actually a Google that is always black although I cannot remember it from the top of my head.

Also: a black Google uses 15w less power than a white google.

No, it's not officially Google, but something like Googoth, for goths. Some guy showed it to me in ICT once. Can't remember the exact name.

Hehe, depends on what kind of display you use. On a LCD it actually uses more power :) Since every pixel has to be lit up to block out the light. Imho it's generally just pure BS anyway. Even a cathode ray tube (CRT) doesn't use any noticable more power when showing a white screen than a black.

It's just one more of those urban myths.

I think Google was just doing this as a reminder to turn off your lights for that specified time period, not to Actually save electricity with your computer.

I agree there, as they must have had some discussion like this about whether it does actually save energy used by our computer monitors.

Clearly you guys misunderstood this, he obviously meant that the global amount of power saved was 15 W.

And this is clearly a symbolic gesture anyway.

As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display.
