teen4m Profile Component Ideas

Post by callumh »

Hello,

I'm not sure if your aware, but myself, Mark and Zach are working on a social networking website called teen4m (see http://www.teen4m.net). You might have read some posts about it ages ago, it's been in development for about 7 months so far.

We have came up with the idea to have different components that users can put on their profile, similar to iGoogle's widgets and Bebo's Apps.

At the moment we have the Windows Live Messenger Component, which uses the WLM IM Control so people can contact the profile owner via MSN.

There is the RaidBOX component, which is a feature that lets users upload their own MP3s and they'll be displayed on their profile for everyone to listen to.

Aswell as the YouTube Video Component, which is pretty self explanatory, but just in case, it lets users display their favourite video on their profile for everyone to see.

Not forgetting the Flash Player Component, a simple, generic way to embed SWF files if they are needed. Could be used for flash games, etc.

What we are looking for is ideas for more components we can develop to make a members profile as interactive as possible with the visitor.

So, any suggestions?

When the site is out for testing you could have a bug submitter.

or...

Favorite Websites
Favorite Songs
Favorite anything
Custom Code, so they can embed things from other sites.
I have some more but i have to think about their use's

Sounds good. Maybe you could name it "My Favorite Places"?

Great Idea!
I would also create a space for music bands. It's a way for them to post their music (in the flash player) and for them to interact with fans.
Here, in Mexico, half of the guys that are subscribed to such networks have as a main objective to be in touch with their fav bands.
Nice Project!

Yeah, all good so far.

Think the "Favourite Sites" component is a definate.

One thing though, I'm not allowing anyone to enter their own HTML, etc. It just creates security holes (i.e. JavaScript redirects). When users post a comment or writes a shout, PHP automatically uses htmlentities(); before displaying it.

Chicago: I like the music bands idea, though it can be achieved by the teen4m clubs (groups) and using the "RaidBOX" component together.

Neological: Favourite anything is already part of profiles, and the websites one is added.

Great!, Yet, do name a section as "Music" or "Band"
Check the way Myspace does it, and see if you like it.

How much storage do you have??
FiFi's idea is excelent because users usually try to share this pic, or so, yet, depending on your storage you must evaluate weather if to allow videos, or by example, make a kinda youtube uploader, or so.

I've already got a development build of teen4mTV - but it requires the videos to be uploaded in FLV format. Conversion uses a lot of CPU and RAM so I don't think it's a good idea, not forgetting software, etc. Although I like the idea of file sharing in general, but we'd have to limit it, say no *.zip, *.exe, etc - and obviously a quota limit.

For the music idea, I thought we could have it as a "type" of club, if you know what I mean, where you can put Components on the main club page, the RaidBOX would come in handy for music clubs.

For the past 3 days, I've rolled out 2 components per day so thats 6 components so far

As of when teen4m will actually go live, we have no idea - sorry, it's too unpredictable, what with bug fixes, etc.

EDIT: This is my 100th post

I think a great idea would be themeable profile pages. How we'd go about that is unknown to me, but I'd like to see a feature in the client help out with that..
