I've been trying to get QEMU to work with one of the provided Linux images (the one with X11 on it), but it always breaks when it gets to uncompressing the kernel: it says an unhandled Win32 exception has occurred. What's wrong here, how can I fix it?

Also, is there a way to get QEMU running in fullscreen?

Try using Qemu Manager:
http://www.davereyn.co.uk/

it is very handy until you have not mastered Qemu parameters.

Gotta second QEMU Manager, very useful and makes QEMU infinitely more usable, strongly recommended.
