e.g ux tweaks like customiser god, security testing, porting, etc

Well most of all you would probably need to know the architecture of Windows - a good resource on that is "Windows Internals" and of course small tadbits can be also found on various blogs, such as Raymond Chen's "The Old New Thing". Of course, knowledge of programming, infosec is pretty much implied if you want to test security and port stuff.
