Hello,

When backing up the server I use DeltaCopy which is an rSync file transfer client. Now up until now its worked great, however its started giving me errors which I cannot explain. The last time this happened I formatted the server, which I do not want to do again.

The error I get isn't specific. Its simply:

Quote:
Generic error occurredRsync.exe returned an error.

And thats it. I don't get any other error.

I have tried:
- Changing the port. This worked for some time but now its failed again and no number of port changes are making it work.
- Googling to see if any software conflicts with rSync. Result was unconclusive.
- Stopping certain services that may cause the error.
- Restarting the DeltaCopy daemon.
- Reinstalling all the software.
- Checked the firewall, including temporally disabling it.
- Checked the server end, it works fine because any other pc can connect.
- Tried updating the rsync.exe file to no avail.

EDIT:

- Tried rsync from the command line, same problem

I'm at a dead end now. This software is perfect for my uses, which no other software can match (I've tried around 15-20 different backup programs now).

Can anyone explain this problem or have a fix for it? I really need this working again or BA could suffer as a result.

Can't you just copy the files across your network normally with Explorer?

That would defeat the point of DeltaCopy... Its an automatic backup client, which compresses files, only backs up files that have been changed, and unlocks files in use for transfer, like the MySQL DB files.

Cant you use the normal inbuild Backup?

ntbackup?

You can schedule a backup with it.
Select files and folders, select files that only have been changed.

No because you can't restore certain files with it. You have to restore the entire backup.

This isnt related to rsync but have you tried Acronis True Image? It does incrimental backups and lets you browse the backups and restore certain files. It also has a scheduler.

I just have to say this. I just blew up at someone just today, because it seems that most of the bloody world thinks that "You should be doing this instead" is a valid response to a request for help. But I digress.

Anyway, are you experienced all with a debugger? If not, are you willing to learn? I can walk you through what you need to know if you are able and willing. If so, let me know what OS you have running, and well see what we can't figure out.

The error I get is in the first post, if you had read it.

I have tried Acronis, and it decided not to play. It would do the backup fine but would hang at the end and never do another backup until I killed the service and restarted it. So that software is off the system now.

I am in the process of getting Symantec Norton Ghost 9 for the server. I use Norton Ghost 9 at home on my XP server but it doesn't work on 2k3 (installer won't install it, says its the wrong OS version). If I can get that, I am sorted as I prefer it over any other software.

To be honest, I spent nearly all day and all night yesterday trying to get this thing working. I don't think there is anything wrong with rsync itself, its something else on the system stopping it. However, I have used all of my skills, got everyone I know to help me, and we still can't get it working. It came to the point last night where I said "sod it" and just left the server with no backup method at all.

I am not willing to debug it. Apart from not knowing the language it was written in, why should I debug someone elses code? Sounds like I'm being lazy, and I probably am, but if it works for others and not me, thats just too bad. I'll look else where.

Thanks for all the suggestions you have all posted.

I am not sure you understand what I mean by debugging. In this case it has nothing to do with the source code, and we aren't debugging in terms "fixing" the issue... we are debugging to see where in the code it blows up... possibly what library and what function call. For all you know, it is failing due to an unreadable sector or something. But I guess you'll tackle that here soon.
