Issues dumping CD-XA discs with multiple tracks

Post by silasqwerty1 »

As a general rule, I've had issues with dumping CD-XA discs with multiple tracks, especially using the MDF/MDS format. As an example, problematic sectors seem to pop up converting them to another format. Alcohol 120% doesn't give me an error warning, but dumping using DiscImageChef crashes with the error: "Unhandled Exception: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Requested more sectors (512) than present in track (117350), won't cross tracks". This is especially an issue since the programs I've tried said that they're unable to verify multi-track CD-XA discs, so I can't directly confirm if the dumps are good. Most of these issues (aside from the verification) don't appear to be an issue using the BIN/CUE format. Is this an issue with the MDF/MDS format itself, or just and issue with both how Alcohol 120% and DiscImageChef handle it? Or is it something wrong with my hardware/setup?

Have you verified that it's really an issue with MDF? I.e dump the disc, and then burnt it back or re-mounted the image and verified that the copy is different than the original? It's most likely not an issue with the formats themselves as both MDF and BIN are raw dumps with occasional embedded subchannel data. It probably more depends on the software doing the dumping...

The original Quake for example s a CD-XA title and I've never had issues with dumping it with A120%, no errors or anything.

Ok, I verified it's integrity by burning the MDF to another disc, dumping the burned disc as BIN, and compared the hash with the BIN dump of the original disc. It all works out, and it turns out that CD-XA with multiple tracks CAN be verified, but not using MDF strangely enough (not even A120% will do it). BIN can be used to verify it properly though. I guess it's time to file some bug reports for DiscImageChef.

So in the end the MDF copy is correct, but it just can't be verified properly in that format? And all you do to verify it is by running a hash of the image file? Any other ways to do it? Have you tried to convert the MDF to ISO or something and verify it that way?

As far as I can tell, the MDF copy is correct, but Alcohol 120% can't verify it saying "Verify Disc feature is not available for CD media that contains Audio tracks.", even though there don't seem to be any audio tracks on the disc. ImgBurn tells me "Invalid or unsupported image file format. Reason: Only single track images are supported." To verify it, I burned the MDF file to a CD, dumped both the original and copy as BIN, and compared the hashes. I can't seem to verify it for MDF (if there are any other programs you want me to try to verify it with let me know), but the two discs are identical as far BIN can distinguish them. And since the disc has multiple tracks, ISO can't support it at all.
