I'm going to be specific: Let's mean no one donates to BA so the cost for the server is higher to maintain (Without the donators help) and let's mean nor Andy nor mrpijey have the money or time to maintain the site.

I think if anyone has a backup of the server then they could make it publicily avaible again, but how would be then inside and outside BetaArchive? Will the members probably go to another site?

Does anyone has a backup of the entire server? (Or at least of an important part?). I hope this site will never shutdown, but we get old and maybe money-less

I think you will answer that will be just like what happened with BA in 2005, but I had no internet by the time, so I don't know what happened then.

So what would happen if BetaArchive would shutdown?

There's always a risk of it shutting down. What happens if Spotify shuts down? Netflix? Twitter? Facebook?

The risk would be minimized of course if we had the funds to host it properly and found more dedicated members to help out and keep it alive, but that hasn't happened for 10 years, and BA has always first and foremost been a hobby project for both Andy and myself. We want of course to expand it and make it better but we're only two people, and any help offered in the past has been very limited and temporary and never panned out in anything useful or sustainable.

We do have backups of the site and if the day would come where we feel the work is no longer worth it we would make sure the archive survives by upload it somewhere else or let someone else host it. But for now it stays with us and us only. But nothing is certain, not as a hobby project or a multi million enterprise like Spotify or other sites. So what will happen exactly no one knows as we can't know what would happen in 6 months, a year or the next 10 years.

This topic is far from theoretical.
The owner of MSFN threatened to shut down the forum last August.
He was not receptive to attempts to take the forum off of his hands.
Fortunately, he reconsidered. I made a backup but it took several months.

How can we help you for now? Except donations, because this is probably out of scope for most of us (what a sick world we live in...).

Sounds like what's happening at Assemblergames right now. Actually it should've already shut down, only the admin/owner, who was completely MIA for a whole year, seems to have disappeared again right after posting his "impending shutdown" notice.
So yes, these things happen.

you're screwed basically. Your house will catch fire and everybody will stop caring about your existence. You'll be homeless with no food, and die in a matter of weeks.

In real terms - there's no known plans/strategies to ever allow members to download the entire contents of the FTP server and create mirrors, so yeah. You have to hope it stays up. Otherwise eventually, a similar situation will happen to OSBA where FTP servers are no longer maintained, archives are lost, and unfortunately things need to be re-leaked and donated. Humans are humans and unfortunately, guarantees can't always be made. Example - both admins die in a freak accident - can they upload all of the content somewhere or will it just die when the bills stop getting paid?

Really it would be in the best interest to increase traffic capacity somehow and allow all of the archive to be mirrored by members. Truly preserve all of the software. Whilst it's mathematically plausible to mirror the server over a couple of decades (when the connection actually runs at advertised speed), someone WILL ban you for mirroring your own archive.

Keep your own archive of stuff that interests you and throw it on torrents. Do the community a solid :)

EDIT:
Just wanted to add some extra $0.02 - very wise words on a similar topic from Compgeke

Very interesting... I have no idea what happened there! I don't remember this.. What happened exactly and why did he want to shut BA down?

The owner of the MSFN forum was going to shut down the MSFN forum due to lack of time and money to maintain it. This was a number of years back, but they got some funds and help. That happens. People's lives change, jobs change, interests change, and nothing lasts forever.
