How many more times will I hear people calling the main tower of a PC a 'hard drive'? There's other stuff in there, too! I was watching the shopping channel and they were selling a laptop, and the guy said something like:

"...all you have to do is plug the mouse into the hard drive..."

Plug it into the hard drive? To do that, you'd need some kind of IDE to PS/2 adapter and even then it still won't work!

How many people do you know who do this or any other computer language slips? I've read a lot of them on that 'Computer Stupidities' website, and they are hilarious!

I saw the same website not long after I first entered the Old OS/Abandonware/Beta Scene back in November 2006, back when I lurked on WinWorld. One person asked like if a 486 and a 286 could be made into a 686. Another person asked if you could catch viruses, from computers that were infected with them. I've heard many people (including on that same website) think that when your Windows 95/98/ME system would display the message "This program has performed an illeagal operation and will be shut down", that they were breaking the law. I also once knew somone, and although he was very intrested in computers and knew a lot about them, he thought that the system itself (you know, the case with all the drives and components), was the monitor, even though he knew the difference. I even heard him talk about how his brother "fixes monitors" when I first met him, and was like "What the heck", since unless you have the right equipment, if you tried to open a monitor, you could kill yourself. I've even heard people call "Disk Space", "Memory", even though "Disk Space" is the amount of space for data on whatever writable media you're talking about, and "Memory", is a term that's used most of the time, as in "Ramdom Access Memory", which isn't the same. I even once saw a guy, and when he was a kid, he was extracting a compressed file, and it said "Exploding", and so he "ran for cover": He hid under the desk, because he thought that the computer was going to explode. I've also heard, a long time ago, family members talking about websites, and instead of saying, for example, "www.yahoo.com", they would say "www.com Yahoo", and one of them even thought that "Minesweeper" was called "Mindsweeper".

A friend of mine ran a 386 without a case. He had all the parts plugged together on his desk, just sitting in the open. One day he was working on it while someone was playing a game on it. What happened was described by him as "blue lightning from the power supply."

He didn't learn his lesson. One day he decided to take apart his monitor. He was in the process of disassembling it when he touched the capacitor. He said his arm felt very strange for several hours. I consider it a miracle that the monitor survived
Forget the monitor, I consider it a miracle that he survived.

My main hate is when people think the following:

Memory = HDD Space.

Yeah...Like when you say this:

"So, how much memory does your new computer have?"

"500 Gigabytes..."

Er...No it doesn't...I'll probably look back on this post in 10-15 years' time and I will think "Is that all? 500GB memory?"

That reminds me...

All computer and video hardware should be shut down each evening. This includes CPUs, monitors and VCRs. The exception to this would be laser printers. They can be left on since they include automatic power-saving features.

You can't turn off the motherboard!

I don't like when people (especially on eBay) confuse GHz with MHz.

For example, "This computer is 800GHz!".

'Tis not 800GHz but most likely 800MHz.

"Pentium 4 2.4GHz"

Reminds me of IT Crowd with Jen and Denim.

Quote:
Jen: E-mail, sending e-mail, receiving e-mail, deleting e-mail... I could go on.
Denim: Do...
Jen: Err, Mice, mices, clicking, double clicking, the monitor, err, the thing that goes on the floor...
Denim: The Hard Drive?
Jen: Correct.
Denim: Well, you certainly know your stuff...

lol :P

When people think that files on a hard drive are burnt, admittedly its a rare occurance but still.
i had a discussion with a person just a week ago who was bragging about 'burning files to his hard drive'.

I usually call HDD space as "space".

"I have a shitload of space on my computer!"

What really pisses me off though is when people come in asking for "Memory" and "Flash Cards". Have to explain about RAM, Camera cards, USB drives, hard drives... [censored] stupid people.
