Hello all,

Today is an interesting day...

9.30am - We had a power cut. The whole building is off except for a few lights out the back building.

10.15am - Still not back on so I went home and grabbed:

650VA UPS
500VA UPS
1200VA UPS
90Ah 12V Battery and 600w power inverter

10.35am - Get back and set up the 1200VA on the router in the other room, 500VA on my monitor and speakers, 90Ah and inverter on my PC.

10.45am - All running back on the web for just my office :D

I'll post pics here later when I can get them off my phone :P

I bet nobody has ever had to do that at work before!

Ha! High speed response unit in it's chug-a-pug saves the day! :D

So I take it everythings unprotected at your home now, lol? :P

My rooms connected the my works internet (I live above the shop), so I make sure everything is running on a UPS, everything from my room down to the whole network (switches, router, modem, server etc.), so power cut all you want, this lot isn't going off anythime soon, lol. That said, my main pc runs down it's 1500VA APC UPS in under 5 minutes, lmao.

Yep everything but the router/modem is unprotected at home now. No point bringing that UPS, its a tiny 300VA.

I finally kicked the bucket and came home. The 500VA UPS died after 35 minutes of powering my monitor and speakers, so I wasn't going to last much longer on the 650VA.

Overall a very fun experience. Hopefully the power should be back on tomorrow.

1.21 JGW should be enough for everyone.

We'll look back in 20 years and laugh at that, just like we did at "640k should be enough ram for everyone"

Heres the pictures I promised. They're STUPIDLY bad. I blame you *points at whoever is reading this* ... well I have to blame someone!

Anywhose, here we go...

This one is the 500VA UPS. Its powering my TFT monitor and speakers. It lasted around 40 minutes before the battery was flat.
Image

Here you can see the 650VA UPS waiting to be used. It will last the same amount of time as the 500VA as it contains the same battery (it can just power more for less time). You can also see the power inverter next to it.
Image

This one (badly) shows the 90Ah 12V SLA battery with the 600watt power inverter hooked up to it. This powered my PC and network equipment. If I tried to turn the server on as well, it would cut off my pc... Weird but we can do without the server. Its mostly storage.
Image

Here is the 1200VA UPS powering the router, and nothing more. It wasn't dead by the time I left so it lasted around an hour with just the router connected.
Image

There we have it. Not much else to say except we now have a new fuse box for the two phases that blew that day and we're also getting a second 100A cable laid from the box into the main building so the sockets can go on one phase and the lights on another.

Did you not read my last post after you said this which means I cannot stay off work. If I stay off I don't get paid. If I don't get paid I don't eat, I don't put fuel in my car, I don't have anywhere to live...

You'll understand one day when you have to do all this yourself. ;)

Yeah but if you borrow you lose those friends when you can't pay them back, so overall, its a big mistake.

reminds me of my school last year... one day, we got dismissed at 11 because the power wasnt on, another day the fire alarm went off like 6 times due to an electrical problem, and we went home early, and then another day the security system disarmed itself and we were sent home for a safety precaution

That's a little messed up that they don't compensate you if something screws up causing you to miss work.

That day was really interesting. (Edited 26/Nov/2009)

@Andy: BTW, as what I said, the 1200VA UPS is the same in the Server Specs at AbyssUnderground. (Edited 26/Nov/2009)

Yes the UPS is the same one. The site needs updating since that server doesn't run AbyssUnderground anymore.

i know it wasn't at work but on my first day of high school...

taking bus to school, about 30 feet shy of the entrance of the school and we just sit there for about an hour and the were set to a middle school where we all sat in the buses for another hour. i happened to have my laptop with me(old compaq P1 233) and 5 battery's for it. it was nice to find open wifi spot in both area the buses were parked. afterwards we found out that the transformer for the school clock overheated and burst. the school was closed for about a week and then once classes started again, we only had about 2/3 of the school.
