Why would you want to use Linux for a server - you already have Windows Server 2003.

I personally prefer Windows over Linux as a server solution - only because Linux is open source...which opens up more security holes than Windows (and without sounding like a fanboy...its been proven before)

Like? You don't even know what distribution to use so how can you know the advantages?

Is this an extra server? Or are you "revamping" one of your old ones?

I always wanted to run Trixbox for an Asterisk setup...

... but the damn thing is broken on i586 boxes >_>

(Dependency issues on some versions, non-existant GRUB entries for the i586 image, broken installs, rebooting trying to launch the installer, etc)

Debian is your best bet if you're new to linux. Ubuntu if you're "absouletly new", but Debian is generally an overall better distro. Just apt-get all your packages.

Don't go with anything RPM based (Redhat, Mandrivia, CentOS, et cetera), as RPM is crap.

If you have any questions regarding it, or want to learn to just use the command line instead of having to waste resources on X11, let me know.

(PS: I use debian on my own box: http://www.swift.ws/phpsysinfo)

Andy,

While I know you love your windows, let's be honest. Your server install of them aren't legal. Have you ever seen the Microsoft cops ever knock on someone's door? If you ever plan on actually using said server professionally, that isn't what you want, trust me.

Linux may not be what you specifically want, but a unix of some sort probably is. Don't be afraid that there is a command line. There is one in Windows too. Using something like Solaris, you won't touch a console any more than you would in Windows... and you can take that knowledge somewhere.

Does the microsoft have cops? :P :D

By the way. Not only linux is a good unix host. Sun Solaris is good and fast.

Maybe it's good, that topic's starter did prefer debian for his needs. I did use a mandriva for the web server needs and can say, that it's sux :^)

Ubuntu Server Edition or Fedora Core 6. I use regular Ubuntu as my main OS, and the people saying "linus opens up more security holes" can shove it up their ass. Linux has less security holes than Windows because they've had hundreds of people fixing all the holes (and people finding the obscure holes), whereas Microsoft fixes some of the public holes and waits until someone finds the rest, then waits a few months to fix them.
