For me it's usually XP Pro, Media Center, or Fundamentals with SP2... I'll install it, then get all the necessary drivers onto it. Then I'll download the 70-or-so updates (I know, I probably should get AutoPatcher someday..)

Then I put in my AutoInstall CD I hacked together long ago, which automatically installs:
The latest Windows Installer
Windows Media Player 11
Adobe Reader 8 - however it's a trimmed down version. It still sucks, but not as much.
Audacity
AVG
DVDShrink
DVD43
EditPad Lite
FileZilla
Firefox with the Adobe Flash plugin
Hashtab - gives you MD5 and CRC32 hashes when you right-click a file
IrfanView
IsoBuster
Java
Windows Live Writer
Nero 6.6
.NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 (I should upgrade it to install 3.5 now..)
IzArc
RealAlternative
PeerGuardian
SpybotS&D
All the SysInternals utilities
ResHacker
uTorrent
VLC
VirtualPC
VirtualBox
The UxTheme patcher + some really nice themes including Watercolor and System5
Windows Media Encoder
DebugMode Wink
The XP PowerToys
..and a nice codec pack which takes care of Xvid and all that stuff.

After that I'll install Office (2007 or 2003 depending on which machine), then a few other apps like Sony Vegas, Macromedia Studio 8, After Effects, Visual Studio 2005, etc. depending on what I'm using it for.

It's pretty straignt forward.

A whole mob of utilities.
  • 4nt and take command
  • regina rexx and McPhee's DLLs
  • file commander / w, shelexec
  • semware editor for windows
  • factor
  • zip, unzip, rar (command line),
  • hexit amd a few listers
  • depend and depends
  • ntsubst
  • dskimage, extract (winimage),
  • iview (os2 help reader)
  • rramdisk
  • shortcut
All this gets dumped into a directory, and added to the DOS patjh environment. From here, i run setup rexx to modify the desktop icons, and add new ones to the \sendto and \system directories.

At this moment, mu main box is 2000, has burnatonce, larcen commander, azzcardfile, winimage, unknown devices, and boswell-toller (Old english dictionary) on it, along with the usual adobe, look-out depress, thunderburd, and irfanview.

Office is by open-office 2.3 and microsoft.

DOS etc are tested at 12 inches (ie real boot), although i have vpc 2004 and vpc 2005, virtualbox 1.52, and some other things.

browsers by opera. microsoft ie6, ie7 (on xp/vista), firefox, and lister.

graphics by pmview and irfanview, although i use ms paint to make pictures. Wallpapers by everyone (i collect operating system wallpapers, DOS, Windows, OS/2).

Then i install some games
  • vista ultimate
  • Wep 5

It depends entirely what I intend to use the system for...
But if it's my system used for fiddling with system files, then the list would
be pretty long...
Just a few that come to mind would be my own reshack, exescope &
XVi32 hex editing packages...
A few years ago I made package for all 3, that installs them to the
program files folder, & adds the appropriate registry entries in the registry
so that I can right click on any compatible file & open it there & then...
Plus I made a reg file that opens .sys files with notepad when right clicking
on them, mostly for bootdisks though...
Then I install the command here onto the right click menu as well, plus
a right click option to have the ability to compress a file to the cab format
with the trailing underscore...
Then there's the right click menu option to "peek" into a file for a quick
binary comparison...
Then there's the right click option to see a files checksum...
The right click option to change a files attributes, dates etc etc...
Then theres the right click option to register/unregister a dll or ocx menu
option...
The right click option to change the uper/lower case of a file...
Then

Open Watcom
7zip
winrar
winimage
universal extractor
pe explorer
hex workshop
iso buster
ico edit
recase
xn resource editor
wdasm8
softice + the video driver pack update
a couple of crack compiling programs, I wont mention what though so don't ask.

then the everyday programs like
acrobat
office
Nero 6, not 7, 7's puss as far as i'm concerned...
registry 1st aid
media player classic with updated codecs
filezilla
anydvd
clonedvd
clonecd2
cdimageui
cabpack 1.4a
stellar phoenix
unit convertor
Net transport download manager
messenger
xp antispy if it's an XP system
crap cleaner
If it's a system that I make certain types of programs on then I don't
use an anti virus program, just sandboxie
Otherwise I use Avast...
The usual powertoys like tweakui etc etc
Eraser , either 5.7 or 5.82, I prefer 5.7 though...

Here's a couple of pics with the right click menu options
showing, I love riught click shortcuts for saving time
obviously...
& VPC, 2004 though, stuck in my ways here...

KenOath, you couldn't post the source of your makecab send to extension could you?

i use a similar thing: "makecab %1 %1._"
but then i get 'shell32.dll._' which can be annoying

@Peteski:
Just

Code: Select all

makecab %1
should be enough as it will then put the compressed file into the source's directory under the same name, with the last letter of the extension being an underscore.

For making cabs...

Code: Select all

CABARC.EXE -m LZX:21 -p -r N "%~f1.CAB" *.*
For extracting cabs...

Code: Select all

EXPAND.EXE -r %1

Windows 2000 SP4 (or my customized build)
Office XP
Firefox (since IE is no longer supported; for some sites)

And that's really it.
Since January 2005, I've been in the Operating Systems Prototype Community. I've enjoyed learning more these past four years about the development of the Windows and Macintosh operating systems, as well as learning of new user-based projects that optimize system performance.

the file compresses perfectly however it is dumped in cd, which in my case is C:\Users\Administrator\
is there anyway that cd can be changed to the 'real working directory' so this doesn't happen?
i always remembered it going horribly wrong when i didn't specify an output.

thank you, this method seems to have better compression than makecab aswell.
