... How can I disable it? I want to disable the hardware from being seen by the computer, because I want to convert the laptop to Linux. The Philips Freevents laptops are, I believe, rather notorious for having Ethernet cards that make all flavours of Linux complain. I don't want to use a patched version of Ubuntu (my chosen flavour now), because that makes updating inadvisable.

Thanks.

Depending on OEM restrictions, there may be a setting in your BIOS that disables integrated devices, such as LAN devices, or audio boards. Check with the manual, or Philps tech support

I suppose the traditional way to disable hardware is to remove it?

Fireware: I've looked at the BIOS settings and there's no such thing available. I'm looking for an editor, so I can turn it off from there.

Frozenport: Have you tried removing an Ethernet card that's built into the motherboard of a small laptop? I'd like to keep my guarantee intact on this machine:)!
