Yep, sure, you will need an adapter, something like these:

http://www.addonics.com/products/io/aa25ide35.asp

Remember, however, that usually notebook HDD's are slower spinning than desktop ones, so it will have a worse speed in accessing and transferring files, it would be better used for storage of data, rather than as "main" OS install.

If it's an IDE HDD, yes, you need an adapter, if it's a SATA drive, you don't as these share the same connectors with their bigger 3.5" brothers. The 2.5" drives will naturally be slower than their 3.5" counterparts, as already mentioned.

Hey, we are talking about a 4 to 10 bucks expense, I guess that if you search a bit around, you can find a place where you can save that amount on the iMac price?

Presumably you can also get it locally. And we're talking about the HD adaptor, aren't we?

Very expensive, I've bought mine for less than 2Euros ... You can also find some external hdd case [10USD on ebay], very useful with a 2"5 Hard drive.

..or even better, expecially for "universal" use, like drive imaging and backup, something like this:
http://www.midte.com/en_productinfo.asp ... ductID=168
http://www.midte.com/upload/UploadFile/ ... 316820.jpg

I got a similar one and rarely have better spent my money in a gadget!
:)
