Depends entirely on what you want to run on it. For basic php pages or or fully static html pages it will be perfect. Once you get into MySQL based apps you'll start sucking the memory and the processor away. Load it up enough and it'll become very slow.

2000 Pro is a good choice. Install up to service pack 4 and you'll have a very stable operating system.

1GHz Pentium III is a good choice again. They are very good processors, but for a server CPU and RAM are the biggest let downs so keep an eye on your usage.

1GB of RAM is good, its what the BA server has and it usually has around 200mb free.

Hard Drives are good but keep an eye on that 8GB drive. Chances are it won't last too long in a server environment with its age.

I agree, even running simple mysql-based apps will bog the server down. When running 2-mysql based sites at once on my P3-700, 512mb ram server, i couldn't even open the start menu.

One concern that I have is the hard disk controller. If I were you, I would get the fastest available, if the system doesnt have atleast an ATA100 controller. My server runs on a Promise ATA66 controller, and filecopying is really slow, even from optical media.

What server software were you thinking of running?
If this will be a windows-based server, I personally would reccomend XAMPP. Thats what I use, and its real easy to configure, and get started up.
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Or you could use IIS, or Abyss. I'd guess that Andy could help you get that setup and configured.

Why do you need 3 servers?

Edit: Why do you need a server at all?

If you insist on having a server, surely 1 would do the job?

I'd like to see you do that when 2 are based here at home, and 2 are remote in USA, one in Texas and one in Sanfransisco. I'd also like to see you get me a 100Mbps connection here at home.

Honestly, If I were you, I would save your parents some money on the electricity bill and wait to use more than one server. When demand comes, then it is time to fire up the second (and 3rd) server. Back when i had a dedicated server, it cost about $30-50 more per computer. (that would be somewhere like 15-25 pounds/euros/whatever you use)

Also, what ISP are you using? If it's a home account, and you are getting the traffic that truely requires 3 servers to accomidate, chances are they will shut you down.

Because his ISP might still charge him for additional traffic if he's on a volume rate... Or am I wrong here?

You'll find most include it in their "limit". So if you have a 20GB limit, and you upload 5GB, it gives you 15GB to download.
