Hello all,

I have been informed of great company from a friend (DanielC, SP admin) that does dedicated servers. Now its French based, which means it should give our european users a lot better speeds. Its also cheaper and provides a lot better specs for the price.

Our current server is:

AMD Athlon 2.08GHz
1GB RAM
120GB HD
100Mbps
1000GB Bandwidth

$120/£60 a month

The ones I have seen are:

Pentium 4 3.0GHz
1GB RAM
750GB HD
100Mbps Unlimited

$76/£38 a month
$94/£47 a month for 1GB more RAM

or

Core2duo 1.8GHz
1GB RAM
2x250GB HD
100Mbps Unlimited

$114/£57 a month
$130/£65 a month for 2x750GB HD instead of 2x250GB (out of our current servers price range)

So as you can see, we can get a much better deal from this other company. Pings will be significantly lower too which can help overall site speed.

I was thinking of moving to a new server some time in the next few months depending on if people thought it was a good idea.

SillyProject FTP is hosted in the same Datacentre so we know the speeds are good and from what Dan has said to me their support is also excellent.

Ideas, comments etc welcome.

Be careful if you decide to buy one though. What looks like a good deal might not be. Their cheapest offer for example is a celeron with 256mb RAM. Bad choice if you're going to do anything but file transfers with it. Remember how much my celeron server used to struggle doing HTTP, FTP, Mail, MySQL, PHP etc. It was at 90% RAM load most of the time and it had 512mb!

EDIT: Fixed typo. Its 256mb ram not 512mb.

Sounds like they have pretty good specs.

Also, I'm guessing there are more users in the EU than there are in the US, right? :P

My server's a Pentium III!

Perhaps you should try Google Analytics, its 1) free 2) good 3) fast and 4) shows you on a map where visitors are coming from, not to mention several other somewhat cool (and useful) things.

1) yeah...
2) sorta...
3) err no, lol, it slows sites down actually. I know this from experience.
4) don't need to know where people visit from ;)

When I started numbering my points, did you not cast your mind back automatically to that day when we were arguing our point about the problematic phone? lol :P

With a hard drive that size, you could set up another mirror of the SP server, then all we needs is some form of a load balancing method then you have a pretty effiecent beta distribution method 8)

I would probably make myself the main site and SP the mirror, and remove the public upload account from the SP server. That way I can manage the files better, do CRC checks etc etc.

But the server is now in France and you have to obey to many bad laws (DADVSI & CO).
OVH is know to shutdown any site that look like warez.
So start your backup manager ....

SP should be dead by now then lmao. Datacentres only close down servers if they get tipped off by someone or the authorities get involved. Otherwise they don't care.

Think what you want.
But don't be surprised if this server die in some month.
Actual governement in France is very close to antipiracy organisation.
They are projects to set up a french version of the China's "Great Firewall".

Well SP has been alive for months now. Not a single hitch and he often hammers his full 1Gbps like it doesn't draw attention.

Anyway nothing is final yet...

Sounds like a good idea to me. I especially like the part about the SP mirror and load balancing! :D

Well, from my opinion, the more specs we have, the faster the server, the easier it is to get things done, such as uploads.

Andy, it is up to you I suppose. I say go for it.
