On my old Windows 2000 machine, the graphics went all 8-colours for about 3 months. Nothing I could do, just booted up one day and it was back to normal (BTW, this was when I really didn't know a lot about computers, plus I was only about 8 or 9). Check your graphics card / any 3rd party (or manufactuers) display drivers... I don't think its a hardware problem personally but I could be wrong...

I just went to it and shaked the mouse and it was like all black. So I pressed Reset. I can barely make it out.  When it was loading 2000, the thing like ||||||||||||||||||||||||||| came up ok but there were random characters everywhere. The bootscreen didnt appear. Then I got login similar to that screenie.

Very strange indeed.

If it is weird even before the OS starts, I'd check the graphics card. Reinsert it or try another one. Can you get into the BIOS and what does it look like there (weird or normal)?

Definitely sounds like a broken video card. Boot into safe mode, or if you can see, try changing the driver to simple VGA. That seems to work on most broken cards, because it is the video ram that is damaged.

Seems to me that the graphics card is FUBAR, is it AGP or PCI-E?

Graphics shouldn't be messed up on VNC too... Thats a very weird one. Sounds like the motherboard or something could be on its way out, unless its a very weird virus. However if it was the motherboard it surprises me that it can boot up at all in that state, especially if you're getting random characters everywhere (which then suggests a gfx issue...). Odd.
