I got my green laser pen from eBay the other day. I took some pics last night :)

Its 8-15mW output power.

Yep, you really can see the beam of it :)

Sweet :D

<3 Lasers... I'd get a bunch of 'em and make some kind of laser light show thingy, it sure beats my previous merging of light and sound which basically consisted of an old amplifier and some christmas light bulbs...

Loads of them on ebay. You're best going buy it now though since they come out the same price or higher.

Yeah, those cheapo low power red laser pens are a bit pathetic though, especially the ones that come with those shaped tips to project like "peace" signs and silhouettes of naked women on the wall...

Are they illegal over here? A lot of people seem to use red laser pointers with PowerPoint presentations, are those not the same thing?

They use a lot less power, 0.5mW, and they are less dangerous to the naked eye. They also don't travel very far, maybe about 50m at best.

However green is the most visible colour to the naked eye, and at 8-15mW, thats powerful. My laser can be seen over 1 mile away on a clear day and the beam is always visible at night.

A red laser's beam is never visible unless you use smoke/lots of dust.

I saw some on digg a while back (sorry no links) that could pop baloons, burnt through paper, and light cigarettes. How cool would that be :)

Unfortunately no but sometimes you can feel it over the back of your hand. Doesn't burn anything. You need 50mW or higher for it to burn anything.

You can "overclock" (lol) these, by turning a small nob inside but it quickly burns the diode out due to overheating so its not really worth it.

Yes, I believe so. You can buy a 120mw Green Laser Pointer in the US. The only legal notice I see is about safe application. Heres a link to where i got the info: http://www.megalaser.com/120mw.htm

legal to own
but there's a ton of warnings
like the wussy old red ones you can point at planes
our local airport has been having problems with people using green lasers to blind pilots during takeoff...

Thats why its an arrestable offense for doing that in the UK. I could often shine mine at the police helicopter (bad idea of course!) because its always hovering around my area. The local pub (bar to some people) always has fights outside and the suspect usually legs it so the helicopter is called out to look for them.

that's 2 month in jail here + time for whatever damages you do (even if it's just the pilot needs glasses now)

yeah
lightshows use lasers over 20,000 USD
and give more then 2W of power
that's... 400 times more then the HIGHER end consumer red laser pens (5mw)
at that point, there's no more burning.
just cutting
you wont burn your wrist
you'll cut off your hand
o.o

and that's just the smaller local lightshows

i found one that's over 100,000 USD with 3 different colors
http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:5qf ... =firefox-a
and that's was the first result for "lightshow laser 5w"

of course they use detractors, mirrors, heavy fog and all that so you can SEE the beam really well, but it doesn't hurt... plus that one beam is often split into a load of smaller ones..
