Here's some resources you may find useful if you decide to write your own OS.

Reference
  • OSDev Wiki - Everything you need to know about getting started with your own OS

Source Code
  • Windows Research Kernel 1.2 - Experimental Windows Server 2003 SP1 kernel replacement
  • NTOSDrop - Server 2003 SP1 kernel replacement based on the WRK, written by Kenneth/WinOCM
  • ReactOS - FOSS Windows replacement, aiming to be compatible with NT 5.2 (Server 2003)

Yes, ReactOS is an option as a base for a custom OS. How silly of me to forget it.

No, you cannot make a UNIX-based OS out of Windows NT or ReactOS source code.

Hmm, it used to be you could download the WRK without having to be a Faculty Member. Looks like they changed that. I do believe the WRK is up on our FTP Server though.
