im not really happy with Microsoft's decision to abandon Longhorn because they had made so much progress and it was all coming out pretty good. Kinda better than Vista too.

The dissucion to restart was right. All Longhorn builds after 4008 had huge memory leaks and were totally buggy and unstable.

All alphas have bugs. They could just fixed them. I think there is a conspiracy behind Longhorn's dubious cancellation.

I do agree to the part where Microsoft used 2003 as their base instead of XP. But i don't agree with restarting the whole project and delivering something uninspiring.

Actually, Microsoft Used Pre-release 2003 code, not XP as commonly believed. That is why it starts in the 3xxx range, and not in the 2xxx range. Its a very common misconception. Most of the range (all the 4xxx builds) used a Server 2003 RC1 base. All microsoft did is update it to RTM at the restart. So, Why?

The old one was really cool, I had tried some of the old builds and I quite liked it. They had got so far. They had bugs that could be fixed. But it was all scrapped.

Sometimes you just know a thread is going to be a circle-jerk right from the start.

Anyway, my opinion mirrors the cirle-jerking, Microsoft should have put more into Vista, escpecially the sidebar.

In front of a Thinkpad
Google Desktop>Vista Sidebar. And Longhorn beta was a resource hog. Sorry, but I don't have anything that can run Vista or Longhorn.

The main problem was the integration of the .NET FRamework in the Shell. This was the Nr 1 problem. .NET is cool for programming app, but not for shell extensions.

I agree that the memory leak was the one thing that probably doomed the project. It seemed like Microsoft could not get rid of it no matter how hard they tried to tame it. It seems though that the entire leak mainly came from the sidebar.

MS always mess things up. Look at Millennium Edition, that was as buggy as hell. I'm starting to think that vista is the new Millennium Edition with a new UI. OK so vista has more security but look at the problems they are having with the drivers. I've seen numerous posts on websites where people are having compatibility problems with hardware. Not to mention that it sucks up and hogs system resources. I am not happy with vista but LH rocks! It works fine on my system (even under VMware and VPC2007!!!!) and I think it was quite an accomplishment until MS went and scrapped it. I think they made a very big mistake.
I wonder if Vienna is going to be built on :?:

I'm not quite sure about that. They appear they are going to completely change the Windows GUI. In doing so, I doubt they will keep much of the original code..at least if they do they will have to recode a good portion of it (They could work off of the same kernel I suppose but I bet by the time Vienna roles around, they are going to want to change it). I guess they could possibly stick with the same base code of Vista but they are none-the-less going to be changing it much more than Vista did with 2003.

I'm not. Longhorn could have been a neat OS.

Take a look on this Longhorn concept:

Doesn't look like Vista at all. So awesome.

Wow

That has changed quite a bit. I wonder why they never released technical demos of that interface or why they never worked further on it. Hpmh, guess we will never know..

Do you happen to know if there are any other concept videos similar to this that were made before the development reset? These are pretty interesting.

I did some searching too and this is what I've come up with that was interesting (we'll probably end up with the same videos :D )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZVAOrmvZsc -- WinHEC 2004 video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxB_Ubs4A74 -- Windows Longhorn with DWM enabled.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0SamLIV1xQ -- Short PDC 2003 Concept video.

(Many of you may have seen these videos already, sorry if they have already been posted. It'll be a nice refreshing reminder if you had forgotten about them)

The 2 firsts arent exactly a concept video.

Look at this one:
