The move to phpBB3

Post by Andy »

Hi all,

I have decided that when the final release of phpBB3 is released, we will move to it. Why? Because the Admin and Moderator features are extreamly good, meaning it takes the load off myself and gives the moderators more control.

There is however one problem. The theme we currently use is not available for phpBB3 and I don't know if it ever will. So what may happen is that we also change templates. However this is not certain and I will do my best to see that we can keep this template as it suits the place perfectly.

What are your opinions and views?

by all means switch ASAP
IMHO after testing its WAY superior to phpBB2...
though it does use slightly more resources, it has WAY more features then phpbb2, especially backend.
And as for the theme, don't see why you can't bring the board in to '07 with a stylish kick-ass theme!

I'd love more moderator features ... compared to an IPB or even SMF board, phpbb2 has no features at all. Sounds like the move to phpbb3 will be nice.

How different is a phpbb3 theme to a phpbb2 theme? Can't we just get a standard phpbb3 theme and mod it to look like the current phpbb2 theme?

Im not entirely sure but a friend of mine who is already using it full time on the beta said that the themes system was totally rebuilt so old themes from phpBB2 won't work with phpBB3. Ill take a long hard look round for some nice themes or ones that look similar.

The annoying thing is that all the mods Ive put into the forum I'll need to put in again! Some include the BA image uploader on the posts page and the forum index page, the delete button next to users names so I can delete spam posters, the javascript I added to the profile admin page to stop me accidently deleting a user like I did to someone the other week... Little things like that. Small, but sometimes very difficult to do as well.

Anyway we shall see. Once its released Ill make a duplicate copy of the DB and set up phpBB3 on it, and let you guys test it out. Obvioulsy any posts you make will be lost as its not the proper forum but it will give you an idea.

Just a heads up for you Andy

The DAJ Glass theme is being made for phpBB3, however from looking at the demo, it looks a lot different from the phpBB2 theme

I agree with switching. Perhaps a new "BetaArchive" logo for the new skin that suits ALL the operating systems?
Since January 2005, I've been in the Operating Systems Prototype Community. I've enjoyed learning more these past four years about the development of the Windows and Macintosh operating systems, as well as learning of new user-based projects that optimize system performance.

I don't see why we can't have a new logo. After all we've had this one over 6 months. Once phpBB3 comes out I'll find a theme we all like, and then start working on converting the site for it.
