I was on the computer, I put a game in (Rollercoaster Tycoon if anyone is interested), and went off. I then heard a big bang come from my computer. I ran back into the room, and the CD drive opened, revealing the shattered remains of the CD. I took out the little fragments from inside the drive, and the CD drive is still in active use.

Has anyone ever had a CD shatter in their drive? This happened to me years ago.

Nope, it's never happened to me. I wonder why it did that in your drive though... maybe excessive force on the disk before you inserted it?

Happened to me. Lost my second disk to Sanitarium, as well as the cd drive.

I was playing the game as normal, then all of a sudden you heard the cd spin up... but it started getting way louder than it normally does. THEN BOOM! The front of my cd drive blew out with bits of shards and dust of what was left of my cd.

It's caused by fast CD drives spinning CDs at 30000 RPM (about 52x). They did it on 'Mythbusters'.

52x cdroms don't actually spin at 52x. Actually, nothing above 24x really spins faster than that. It is reading/caching tricks.

Sanitarium... In my case it was also old good Sanitarium (I've invented the best way to run it under XP). CDs of old games were made for 10-16x CD-ROM drives, not 52X, so they are easily breakable.

While it's never happened to me, i'm intrigued ... I wonder if there's a way to mod a CD drive so it will definitely shatter whatever disc is placed in it? Surely it's possible?

EDIT: oops, double posted?

I'm pretty sure you could take a CD drive and connect its motor to a higher voltage (I guess 20V should be enough to shatter the disc without burning out the motor).

I've heard that physical defects (i.e. small cracks) cause the shattering while the disc is being spun. Is there any truth to that?

Definately. Centrifugal forces can make them bigger and then eventually they split futher and further until the disk shatters.

Yup! They did do the lot of these on 'Mythbusters'. For those that missed it: They took loads of CD's and subjected them to various forms of neglect (scratches, direct sunlight, labels, etc) and bunged them all in CD drives. Whilst they couldn't recreate the myth, they had recieved stories of it happening to other people. The thing is with these guys, when they can't recreate myths given the true scenario (ie. sticking the cd's in the drive), they go one step further and make them fail by any means necessary (which is the fun bit!). In this case, they hooked up a variable speed mains powered angle grinder (US being 110v?) and a CD tray with the regular 5.25" metal surround. I forget what speed the cd shattered at, but I'm sure it was 10's of thousands RPM?

For anyone that's interested, episode 2:

I had it happen to me on a beta of Win98 1650, original CD...
Heard the bang, used a spike to remove the tray as it stuck in, emptied
it out & was good to go again...
& believe it or not, the next CD I had turn up of the same beta, the CD
had a fine crack, 2mm long just starting on the inside ring...
I used alcohol to make an image of it at the slowest speed possible to
save the Original CD...

at my old job we had this one bloke who flat refused to update to Windows 2000 with everyone else. He was quite happy with Windows 98, even when MS stopped supporting it. So we waited for him to go on holiday, then got the machine in the IT room and started to install...... the Windows 2000 CD snapped! Not shattered, snapped clean in half... he was chuffed when he got back........

I'm quite scared of a CD shattering in a laptop, but I havent heard of it before...

I had a Beta of Win98 build 1650 explode in a drive, I was making a
backup of it before using it, never got to make the backup until finding
another on ebay, to which had a small hairline crack starting on the
inside ring...again...
& get this, the thing from factory was made bootable with an NT5
bootsector, kept giving errors when attempting to boot of it, I
checked it out with isobuster & found the boot sector was a 2kb NT one,
factory from MS...

I hope that doesn't happen on my laptop. Its only 2.5 cm thick and if a disk shattered it would send fragments smashing into all the internal workings.

Not while in a drive, but when I ran over some random CD with my computer chair it shattered :D

I also remember once, my mum got pissed off at me and snapped a CD in half - it then proceeded to shatter into a million pieces, with all shiny dust going all over the floor, it took her ages to clean it up :D
